Another long week at work, so I will post another of the planes that is in good shape. This plane is a Stanley Bailey 5 1/4 Junior Jack Plane. I purchased this plane on ebay and it arrived in the mail today. It came with it’s original box and is in good shape.

Today I surface ground the sides and sole of the body of the plane. I understand I will probably have to lap them again after I assemble and tension the plane, but this will get them perfectly square and leave minimal stock for hand lapping. Here is a shot of grinding the side:

This was a craigslist item that showed up yesterday evening. I quickly arranged to head over to the sellers house and pick it up. The Stanley 112 is a scraping plane used for finishing surfaces similar to a card scraper. According to Patrick Leach, “this is one of the finest tools ever to have been unleashed on the public from New Britain, Connecticut.” It has been on my shopping list for a while.

type 9 per the web resources; so it’s a Stanley Bailey #6 that’s at least 105 years old (which, to my kids, is roughly the same age as me)
remarkably good shape with a the requisite broken tote, but most of the horn intact
evapo-rust due in the mail tomorrow – tote to be epoxied tonight – let the games begin!

I made a pass through some local antique stores today on my way home from work and found an interesting book. Interesting that is if you have galloot like tendencies. Unfortunately the trip did not turn up any interesting tools. The book is the 1902 edition of Benchwork in Wood by W. F. M. Gross. The book was orignally printed in 1887. It has coverage of hand tools, techniques, wood, and jointry. It is going to be a very interesting read.

Whoot. The plane arrived today. I unpacked it and started the inspection. I only found one surprise which is a good thing. Now all I need is for the IBC blade to arrive and I will be ready to “get er done”.
I picked up some brass sheet and rod yesterday, so I can also begin the process of creating a new lever to adjust the mouth. Thanks again Mads!!!!

There is a monthly antique sale here in town. I went down there with the family this morning to look around. I’ve got some pictures to share of what I got today and will add these at the end of the entry. I’m sharing primarily because David asked to see what I got.

Today is Mothers day. To cellibrate, the family and I went to the monthly antique sale. and I thought I would document the day’s find. This antique sale is fairly large and makes for a good family outing. There is a little something for everyone. I did miss one item that made me wish I had been there a little earlier. I have not been good about taking interim pics, here’s the number 6 after electrolysis and a lot of cleaning…

since most of the japaning was lost to time, scrubbing and electrolysis, i’m going to eventually sandblast and refinish

Well I finally got around to getting some BLO (Boiled Linseed Oil). While I was waiting for the firehouse table stain to dry I grabbed a plastic container and squirted some BLO in it and placed the plane straight up and down. I must say I was highly impressed with how quickly it started to work. You could literally see the oil getting drawn up through the plane. In about 10 minutes it had pulled the oil up about an inch high (out of the 22” length of the plane). Post some more pics tomo...
