Sharpening chisels—forget weaker micro bevels
Controversial though it may seem, and though adopting micro-bevel methods for sharpening chisels may seem to make sense, a freehand convex bevel actually gives exactly the same sharpness as any micro-bevel method, but takes only a fraction of the time to develop. I have been a bit frustrated, as I can’t use my shop until the outside portion of our house reconstruction is complete which should be very soon. I’m sort of sad this week. It’s just frustrating to me, what is happening now. In the big sense, and the little Lumberjock sense.
An artist and L-J’er that I greatly admire, Thomas Angle, can’t find anyone to buy his work, and he has shut down his business operation

A couple of days ago I spent some time rehabbing an old block plane that used to sit on the bottom of my steel carpenters box or in my nail bags depending on what I was working on at the time. Let me start by saying that the first part of this blog although posted earlier today, was actually made about a year ago, I just posted it today as a preceding part to the one you’re reading now… tried not to double post and ‘push’ other’s from the blog front page, so I waited half a day between 2 posts, although both were made ready at the same time.

I finally got a chance to practice hand-cutting dovetails. This is the first time I’ve made a cut with my new Japanese dovetail saw and use my new bench too.
I started out with a couple scrap pieces of pine:

First cut… didn’t follow the line so well. It will take some getting used to.

I always wanted to try electrolysis rust removal and it is just as simple and effective as they claim.
Note: This is not a full tutorial on electrolysis. You must research the many other resources on the internet before attempting this your self. IT CAN BE DEADLY AND ILLEGAL IF DONE WRONG.

I must apologize for my lack of interaction here on LumberJocks. I am on the night shift at the paper mill and my neighbors don’t dig the 2:30 am woodworking bit, so I have been limited to my keychain work and ya’ll have seen that. It is my night off and I remembered a couple requests a while back to do a blog on my keychain process. So, here ‘tis! I hope the video comes out right.

Stanley Bench Plane Restoration UPDATE
PDF ELECTROLYTIC RUST REMOVAL INSTRUCTION SHEET
My Stanley Bench Plane restoration project is progressing well. All parts have been cleaned of rust using the electrolytic rust removal process described in the prior blog entry. I was really impressed with how clean the parts were after the electrolytic de-rusting process.
As a reminder, this is NOT a plane with intrinsic collector value. I am restoring this “user plane” to be used on my bench...
