Archive Videos #1: Sweedish woodworking and misc.

135 days ago by dryhter | 3 comments »

I was at a blogsite http://villagecarpenter.blogspot.com/ and followed a link to some archived video. I spent the better part of a day watching and marveling over these glimpse into the past. I think it is the fact that these were utilitarian items made for everyday use and although some artistry was involved most important was that the piece function. These craftsmen developed the skills to economically produce a no frill product. If you can take the time to watch you will notice that there...

My Hand Tool Journey #1: The Journey Begins

14 days ago by Kent Shepherd | 21 comments »

stefang offered a challenge the other day for us to create a blog on hand tool use. That was good timing, because it’s been on my mind for some time now. This will be a series in several parts—I don’t yet know how many. If you are lucky, I will have the sense to know when to quit. If not—Well, I suppose you may stop reading and go do something worthwhile—Like work in your shop. I hope you stick around. As I’ve stated before, I grew up working in my Dad...

Hand Tools Odyssey #1: What is Sharp?

75 days ago by gizmodyne | 11 comments »

Intro to Hand ToolsThree Saturdays ago, Kristin and I woke up early and headed down to good ol’ Cerritos Community College to start our new class, Woodworking with Hand Tools. Previously we have taken Basic Woodworking, Cabinet Making and a Furniture Lab together. I have also taken table making and a few more lab classes. I have a pretty good grip on basic furniture making and power tool use, but have been frustrated in my use of hand tools. Kristin is not a fan of huge power tools...

Roubo #1: Wherein our protagonist drinks the crazy juice, and decides to use 4/4 lumber.

264 days ago by Jon3 | 4 comments »

So brief background is that about a 18 months ago, I bought a load of lumber off ebay. While there, I ended up also buying 350 BF of flatsawn white ash for $100. I figured, even if it ends up being ‘test’ pieces and shop projects, it would still be worth it. Fast forward to recently, and I’ve been planning to build a new bench, and I’ve pretty much decided on a Roubo. I picked up the lovely Benchcrafted tail/wagon vise, a german bench screw, and some holdfasts. ...

A bow saw project #1: To Build a Bow Saw

467 days ago by Texasgaloot | 10 comments »

Before I can chronicle more of Moby Plank, which I’m itching to do, I need to get the mesquite legs and stretchers made. In order for me to complete the legs, which will be carved out of 5×5x 36 blocks of mesquite, I need a band saw much bigger than the little hobbiest one I have. I can’t afford a band saw until the project is completed, and I get paid. Hence a conundrum. After pondering possible possible solutions, and my wife objecting to me selling the kids, I struck u...

Building a shaker wall clock with hand tools (more tools than building)

491 days ago by RobD | 6 comments »

! I took some pictures to “document” my adventure of building these clocks by hand. It is by no means a complete record of the construction process but hey – its my first attempt. First, some nice boards from my stash on the bench. Laying out true and false bottoms and tops Ripping with a saw over 100 years old but it still works great (after being sharpend of course ;-) Crosscutting…(too lazy to pick up the other saw…) Parts are r...

Hand Cutting Dovetails

611 days ago by teenagewoodworker | 20 comments »

Hey everyone, This podcast is on hand cutting dovetails. I’ve had a few problems with some things in my printer table so it will take longer than i expected to get the third episode out. I figured i would add this one so i am not podcast less for another week or two. I think that everyone will like it. I had originally planned on having this and other videos on the same podcast for like a library of different joints but those are not filmed yet. So i hope that you like it and i hop...

Hand Tool Journey #4: Building a Work Bench

45 days ago by Blake | 18 comments »

I did a trade for some woodwork with a guy who had a garage full of lumber and several nice hand tools. Most of the lumber was Oak. I don’t really like working with Oak. But I thought it would be perfect for a bench, and there was enough of it. I got lots of different lengths and widths. Most of it was 3/4”. I forgot to take a “before” photo of the stack but here is a sample: Now I intend to make a nice, sturdy bench, but its going to be more functional than ...

Of donkey's ears and benchhooks.

196 days ago by Skarp | 5 comments »

Some shop aids/jigs are so simple that they fly under the radar. Others have been somewhat lost in the mists of time. Others are superseded by technology. I personally like to use hand tools, I find it much more relaxing and safer than loud whirling blades. These have their place, and I use them also. Just not my preference. In any case, using hand tools can be very nice for working on really small pieces of wood for inlay banding and the like. It can also be an exercise in frustration withou...
