I’ve returned from a great vacation yesterday. We’ve visited lots of beautiful places in Sri Lanka and one of them was a small local woodworking factory. I’ve taken following photos for you to enjoy:
Lots of hand tools in action, huh? ;)

stefang offered a challenge the other day for us to create a blog on hand tool use. That was good timing, because it’s been on my mind for some time now. This will be a series in several parts—I don’t yet know how many. If you are lucky, I will have the sense to know when to quit. If not—Well, I suppose you may stop reading and go do something worthwhile—Like work in your shop. I hope you stick around.
As I’ve stated before, I grew up working in my Dad...

Hey everyone,
This podcast is on hand cutting dovetails. I’ve had a few problems with some things in my printer table so it will take longer than i expected to get the third episode out. I figured i would add this one so i am not podcast less for another week or two. I think that everyone will like it. I had originally planned on having this and other videos on the same podcast for like a library of different joints but those are not filmed yet. So i hope that you like it and i hop...

I did a trade for some woodwork with a guy who had a garage full of lumber and several nice hand tools. Most of the lumber was Oak.
I don’t really like working with Oak. But I thought it would be perfect for a bench, and there was enough of it. I got lots of different lengths and widths. Most of it was 3/4”. I forgot to take a “before” photo of the stack but here is a sample:
Now I intend to make a nice, sturdy bench, but its going to be more functional than ...

The traditional woodworking tools in Japan all share a few common characteristics, the most important of which is its simplicity, followed very closely by its ability to perform a single dedicated task extremely well. This leads to an amazing variety of almost identical tools that do different things. This is best seen when you take a look at the shelves that store the ”kanna” in a reseller’s shop. I probably should have started saying that ”kanna” is the generic...

When I was a youngster in what they now refer to as “mid-century”, my father had a hand plane. I had no idea what kind and no idea what it was supposed to be used for, but I used it to shape my PineWood Derby car for my cub scouts race. (In case you’re wondering, I didn’t win, place or show. Just barely made it down the track.)
Until recently, that was my only experience with a hand plane. Since hanging about LumberJocks I’ve read all kinds of stuff about ...

Intro to Hand ToolsThree Saturdays ago, Kristin and I woke up early and headed down to good ol’ Cerritos Community College to start our new class, Woodworking with Hand Tools.
Previously we have taken Basic Woodworking, Cabinet Making and a Furniture Lab together. I have also taken table making and a few more lab classes. I have a pretty good grip on basic furniture making and power tool use, but have been frustrated in my use of hand tools. Kristin is not a fan of huge power tools...

Hello and welcome to my first Blog!
The intent of this blog is to track my entrance into the world of woodworking. There seems to be a gap between the people who are just getting into woodworking, and those who have been enjoying the hobby for ten years. So, this is my attempt to fill some of that gap. You’ll get to watch me make mistakes, buy some bad tools, and hopefully you’ll learn from my mistakes.
First off is my mission statement, the “why am I doing this?”...

I closed the shed in October last year and took the toolbox inside as I had no intention of working through the winter on this project – even though it was near completion. The cold damp air is not good for the wooden tools and they deserve better at this stage in their lives even if they have withstood worse in the past…..
So Christmas passed, then January, February, March; finally in mid-April, I re -installed the toolbox and started work again. The frame of the chair was already glu...
