I finally received my shipment from Rockler. I opened up the packaging for one set of the AA powered quartz movement w/ pendulum and one package of the hands that I had selected. I assembled them and hung them on the wall. It took me a second (literally) to realize that the second hand was moving backwards. Also, the pendulum wouldn’t keep swinging. The hands also kept coming off the drive shaft. I reassembled after verifying the diagram on the back of the packaging. Still unacce...

I’ve had this project on the back burner (literally- it was standing in the back on the burner…) for a long time (just click on the “Previous blog entry” and you’ll see what I mean). and I think it’s due to the fact I have high expectations out of this project, that sometimes I feel are a bit over my capabilities and abilities at this day and age.

While visiting family in Tennessee this week (hence the “pappaw”), I managed to rummage through my late grandfather’s very scary tool shed, which has been pretty much been locked up since he died around 13 years ago.

I saw this FWW Complete Illustrator Guide to Woodworking, and while I found most of the book to be mediocre (although a nice reference book when you’re starting woodworking) I did pick up a couple of cool ideas from it… then again, it might have been from a different book…lol

Mine was about 7 years ago, I still wasn’t doing anything woodworking like, and we had moved to a new apartment where the bathroom door wouldn’t close since it was too tall and would hit the jamb (well- actually we mounted one of those over-the-door-hanger thingies which made things that way) so, my wife suggested we get a handplane to fit the door to the (now lower) opening.

I have to “rough cut” the curved pieces of the chair now and, to come back to the jig-saw question, you can’t use a jigsaw to cut a curve in 90mm beech. Admittedly it’s not very easy with a bowsaw but it is possible. What if you halved the piece of 90mm wood, cut it with a jigsaw, and glued it back together again? – Yes, you could do that; but there isn’t a jigsaw in Mr Wake’s box, nor is there a power point in the shed. End of discussion.

The timber is still moist to the touch and heavy, probably about 28% moisture, but it will be easier to cut in this condition and will dry quickly with a smaller cross-section. It is time to rough-cut the components. You may remember that I have already selected and prepared pieces for the main members – the back legs.
