Oil/Gas Can Guitar Build

03-30-2012 10:11 PM by Brett | 5 comments »

Hey everybody! My Brother-in-law has a birthday coming up (actually it’s today) and I never know what to get him. He always gets me something for my birthday and it’s usually a thoughtful gift. He can get whatever he wants whenever he needs it so gift giving, at least for me, is sort of difficult. He likes music and plays guitar so I thought that a guitar made from an old gas can would be a unique gift, something that he may have never even heard of or seen. I have never ...

10-01-2012 08:27 PM by YorkshireStewart | 10 comments »

For this, my first effort, (that suggests there’ll be at least a second!) I’m using some pieces of sapele that have been lying around for some time. Bending iron by Heath Robinson or Rube Goldberg! To Part Three

Electric Bass Guitar.. #5: Yesterday...

05-14-2012 10:21 PM by degoose | 12 comments »

Marked out the shape of the headstock… Off to the band saw cut the relief on the headstock… sliced off the excess…[will be smoothed at the TWC] I find having the resaw guide [MagSwitch brand] is easier on the other side of the blade… And now for the Demon shape…. Involving Johnathan in each part of the build… it is his after all … I am just providing the workshop.. and some tuition…NB…. the offcuts were taped to the bla...

Guitar string inlay for bentwood ring

02-20-2014 09:26 PM by Heavy | 2 comments »

Since I posted my bentwood ring tutorial video I got a lot of emails and messages on how to do an inlay for them. Since I had to make one with a guitar string I made a video of it. The picture isn’t quite clear as it is taken with an phone (I will try to make a better one soon and post it here) but as you can see it is a Walnut ring with 0.45 bass guitar string. Hope this will clear out some things for you and persuade you to try this technique.http://youtu.be/SXkcadAlErc Than...

random #29: Brian May's guitar

11-13-2009 03:15 AM by Gary Fixler | 7 comments »

I just learned from a reddit post (I know some of you are also redditors) that Queen guitarist Brian May built his guitar, “Red Special” with his dad in 1963 when he was sixteen, mostly “from an 18th century fireplace mantel that a friend of the family was about to throw away.” He’s been using it on tour and in albums for over 3 decades. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Special The manufacturing subsection at the link is a fun read for woodworkers and guita...

Traditional Woodworking Tours #2: Wayne Henderson Guitars - Rugby, Virginia

05-08-2014 02:48 AM by WoodAndShop | 5 comments »

By Joshua Farnsworth (Writer at WoodAndShop.com) In the above Video I show a visit that I made to the workshop of legendary guitar luthier and bluegrass musician, Wayne Henderson. Wayne’s shop and home sit along a quiet country rode in the rural village of Rugby, Virginia. Read my original article here. Wayne Henderson’s performance resume stretches from The White House to Carnegie Hall, and all the way to the Queen of England. He is perhaps even more well-known for his world-cl...

Guitar Build #1: Hooligan Guitar Build Day's 1 and 2

05-14-2010 03:00 PM by rcflyer23 | 8 comments »

I have decided to build my own guitar. It’s something I have wanted to do for a long time and I hope to eventually turn it into a FT hobby someday.. So I finally took that first step this week. I got plans from Chris over at http://www.eguitarplans.com he draws up some really good plans. The body is going to be a 2 piece Solid Mahogany body. I started by cutting the two sides to length about 19” for this guitar so that I had a little extra to play with. Glue U...
