Electric Bass Guitar.. #5: Yesterday...

706 days ago by degoose | 12 comments »

Marked out the shape of the headstock… Off to the band saw cut the relief on the headstock… sliced off the excess…[will be smoothed at the TWC] I find having the resaw guide [MagSwitch brand] is easier on the other side of the blade… And now for the Demon shape…. Involving Johnathan in each part of the build… it is his after all … I am just providing the workshop.. and some tuition…NB…. the offcuts were taped to the bla...

Guitar string inlay for bentwood ring

59 days ago by Heavy | 2 comments »

Since I posted my bentwood ring tutorial video I got a lot of emails and messages on how to do an inlay for them. Since I had to make one with a guitar string I made a video of it. The picture isn’t quite clear as it is taken with an phone (I will try to make a better one soon and post it here) but as you can see it is a Walnut ring with 0.45 bass guitar string. Hope this will clear out some things for you and persuade you to try this technique.http://youtu.be/SXkcadAlErc Than...

random #29: Brian May's guitar

1620 days ago by Gary Fixler | 7 comments »

I just learned from a reddit post (I know some of you are also redditors) that Queen guitarist Brian May built his guitar, “Red Special” with his dad in 1963 when he was sixteen, mostly “from an 18th century fireplace mantel that a friend of the family was about to throw away.” He’s been using it on tour and in albums for over 3 decades. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Special The manufacturing subsection at the link is a fun read for woodworkers and guita...

I have decided to build my own guitar. It’s something I have wanted to do for a long time and I hope to eventually turn it into a FT hobby someday.. So I finally took that first step this week. I got plans from Chris over at http://www.eguitarplans.com he draws up some really good plans. The body is going to be a 2 piece Solid Mahogany body. I started by cutting the two sides to length about 19” for this guitar so that I had a little extra to play with. Glue U...

1st Acoustic Guitar Happy-Fun Time #3: The Mold and the Bending Machine

578 days ago by Cosmicsniper | 4 comments »

When I last left you, we were right at the point of beginning construction on many of the jigs and forms that will make this endeavor much easier. Conveniently, the timing works very well since I’m still awaiting the opportunity to make it down to Austin to pick up that Performax 22/44 that I got off eBay (thanks to my cousin, Brady, for getting it for me). This, of course, will allow me to get all that beautiful wood down to thickness easily and more precisely. In the meantime, t...
