Hey everyone, It was suggested that I start a discussion on how to find and harvest burls. Please give your input also.
I don’t deal with straight grain that often. I cut and sell burls for a living so here is what I know.
It is illegal to harvest a burl without permission. of course if it is on your own property you can give yourself permission. What I do is put an ad on Craig’s list saying I want your burls. Most people don’t know what burls are. So you don’t get that many calls....

Once the weather warmed up I was able to go outside to spray the drawer fronts.
This is the back that will be screwed up to the drawer and so it will never be seen again. So here is your last chance. It’s quilted maple veneer.
I used it because it was big and i had a lot of it and I wasn’t sure that I’d ever use it so now some is gone.
I can’t believe that I never took a picture of the drawers being sprayed. But, here they are installed. on the drawers.

My wife was starting to get ready for some Christmas decorations. She notified me that she’d like a Sofa table to place against the wall in the kitchen to put decorations on. She also stated a requirement that it be like the Thorsen table that was built by my son Dave. for the Thorsen Table Challenge that we had earlier here on LumberJocks.com . His table has aged some since Dave made it and it now sits in the kitchen where my wife puts her purse when she comes into the house.
It’s wh...

I have been building the drawers.
Here is a jpg of the model.
I started with some layout.
Then I cut the fingers with a jig I made.
I was left with this.
I ran a rabbett down the drawer side.
The drawer side fingers were left proud. I pillowed them with sandpaper.
More Pillowing
I was left with this.A glueup.
I didn’t get a picture but I ran a dado on the sides for the backs to sit in and another all around for the drawer bottom.
Here it is wit...

Well this project is taking WAY longer than I had anticipated but I am still enjoying it.
I finished installing all 90 some odd plugs and installed some Brusso ball catches to the tops of the doors. This was making me nervous as I have not used them before. I bought brad point bits from LV so I could drill them accurately. That took two weeks of waiting. They turned out nicely though and I really like the way they click into place.
I made a decorative detail for the step dow...

After I got the counter top in I did the thing which makes your heart beat fast. I cut a hole in the top of the sink.
It was planned, but it doesn’t make it any easier.
Once that hole is there, there is no going back.
So for the next 3 hours, I put in the faucet.
Hooked up the new Dish Washer.
And put in the cabinet that will hold the trash containers.
And what do you get. A plumbing nightmare. The drains from the two sinks are at a different height. and ar...

No it was not an offer of free wood.
A posting on one of my blogs last night was a offer of most immense proportions. The offer was to allow me to use his shop and his time to work on a project for my wife. Here was his offer
I immediately responded yes. The LumberJock was none other than our respected Lee Jesberger
I mean here was a LumberJock that built 36 kitchens for one customer. Here was a LumberJock that built a $100,000 kitchen for another customer. He was allowing me to be h...
