Update to My - Preface to the Wood Gloat of the day

06-08-2009 12:35 AM by Karson | 38 comments »

A month and 1/2 ago I posted Preface to my Wood Gloat where I blogged about some maple wood that I got from a sawmill in Delaware. I showed these logs that I saw in the sawmill back in Feb 2007. I asked the sawmill owner to cut of those logs for me. He said no he was going to keep them. Well today I got a phone call from the sawmill owner. He stated that he has closed the mill down and was going to go back to working masonry. I think that the economy and the lack of getting l...

Work(shop) in Progress #9: so, what's the plane?

05-13-2009 07:07 PM by PurpLev | 28 comments »

I guess this is a tool gloat more than anything. I like hand planing boards, but sometimes, and especially when trying to get a board to a certain thickness (while keeping it straight) I just want to be able to throw the board through an infeed and automate that process. especially since I’m coming up with some projects that require large/long boards to be planed down. so, with a budget in mind, I keep an eye on craigslist from time to time. the only things I’ve seen in my p...

Chasing accomplishments...... #5: Bad news and good news

02-03-2012 08:38 PM by KTMM (Krunkthemadman) aka. Lucas Crenshaw | 17 comments »

I want to apologize if my blog has been the most depressing so far. This week my wife lost her grandmother. If you have been following my posts this past year, we have seen a lot of loss in friends and family. She is in a better place, which in and of itself is a relief. On to some good news. I have spent the past 6 months working on a project for a friend of mine. His office was due for some major updates to it’s network and server. This project has taken a lot out of me, both ...

Wood Gloat #21: Pen blanks and curly maple.

11-14-2012 09:41 PM by degoose | 17 comments »

MORE wood you say… but of course… can’t have too much wood… After turning my first pen, I became interested in pen blanks… went to see Trevor… he had told me that they were cutting some New Guinea Rosewood BURL… Also picked up some Huon Pine, Rose She-Oak, Dorrel [native Olive], Camphor, Tiger Myrtle and some Gutta Percha.. Went down to one of my favourite wholesale timber merchants… I had heard that there was a new guy there…...

Christmas Gift of a Tool From my L/J Friend

12-29-2010 09:45 PM by rivergirl | 17 comments »

GI will take this opportunity to thank my dear friend David for a lovely lovely lovely Christmas gift. David has sent me a Ryobi jigsaw- to help me along in my woodworking struggles. This lovely newfangled device will replace? Or just push aside the VERY ANCIENT craftsman jigsaw that my sister found in the trash in Las Vegas and gave to me. So I am terribly excited and very grateful to my friend! Hugs and kisses to you David! Now I am going to pack up a little box to send to David t...

Wood Gloat - The never ending generosity of an LJ

04-27-2010 07:51 AM by majeagle1 | 14 comments »

This weekend I had the wonderful opportunity to go visit Ira, “Rustfever”, in Central Calif and he bestowed upon me some pieces of the greatest selection of woods I have seen in a long time. After a tour of his fantastic shop, he proceeded to take me to several “pallets” of his collection of fine woods. After about 4 hours of “drooling” and acting like a “kid in a candy store” I selected the following: 8 boards of “Red Gum Eucalyptus...

Urban Logging #1: Wood gloat! 3 trees! One big spalded maple & 2 big black walnut trees

07-29-2012 02:47 AM by HalDougherty | 13 comments »

I’ve spent the entire day cutting trees into logs and bringing them home… They aren’t lumber yet and all of them are not here yet, but it won’t be long now. Here’s a couple of shots of the maple. It’s a little over 30’ long and the big end is 36”. It’s been down a year and it’s spalded, but not punky. I cut into it to see what it’s going to look like after it’s sawn. It’s also tiger striped through and through. I...
