Here I sit, on a cloudy, cool, uninspiring day in the Mojave Desert and Momma comes in from the mailbox. And Says, “Who do you know in Scotland?” “GEE, JAMIE!” I hollered. I cut the package open and ….................looky here at what I got! A beautiful piece of burl made it across the big pond. Now my mind is racing and searching for the inspiration for a project that will impress Jamie. All that comes to mind is Mafe! Where are you when I need you? lo...
I’m SO new to woodworking that nearly EVERY project has me back at the bottom of some learning curve or another. I rarely get to fall back on skills that I’ve learned well, used often, and perfected. And … when I leave glitches in my projects, making ME think I earned a grade of “B+” or “A-,” I always wonder …. What if I did that project again. Would I get an “A?” So …. I’m making my wife a box, based on the ...
Soviet USSR equal Stanley #5 1/2 gift from Ukrainian LJ GeorgeThank you George. Soviet equal Stanley #5 1/2 as it arrived in the box. I said it before – if we knew how amazing life can be we would not believe it!.This story is just one more prove that kindness really exists and that life can take magic turns. Old times:My grandfather Ole (photo) was a naval military man, high range, working in Washington for five years as a military attaché for the Danish government, but ev...
I received today my prize for winning fifth place in the Summer 2009 LumberJocks contest. I wish to thank Major League Woodworking The prize consisted of a T shirt ”Property of Major League Woodworking Shop Dept”, A Maple Mallet which is modeled after a Baseball Bat. It’s made from an approved bat billet and is made at one of the countries premier baseball bat factories. Also a Maple Marking Gauge for giving a perfect ”base line” for starting woodworking...
I just had to take a brief moment to share with my friends here on Lumber Jocks a gift I recieved this year for Christmas. Folk who know me personally can attest I don’t find myself lost for words very often. This Christmas I opened a gift that honestly choked me up. As I mentioned in my latest project (Cornerstone) my Father In-Law has from the beginning supported me as far as my woodwork goes. He knew I have had a crazed desire to get my hands on some old hand planes, restore them,...
My Eldest daughter seems to have a knack of finding some very apropos gifts. This birthday I got a “T” shirt and a wall sign. Both of them are handyman oriented. Thanks Karrie
My wife has been sick the last few days, so I stayed home from work to tend to her. Every now and then I would go out to the shop and get a little done while she slept. I had started back on the dovetails and am near finished. This is one of the largest box frames I have dovetailed by hand. Pairing and rasping to clear the saw marks. The dozuki might not have much kerf but my hands wander a little while I saw. Not being able to see well doesn’t help either. Then the mail ca...
My good buddy Jockmike2 gave me a call on sunday. he was out of town and wanted me to post his entry in the contest on LJ. Unfortunately, I was in my car also and I was not able to git-r-dun. But then today I received a soggy package from the post office. It was a cardboard box wrapped up in plastic wrap. I opened it up and it was a double pack of Vernors Soda. You can’t find this stuff around here and Mike said it’s readily available where he live. So he sent me a...
Last week when I was in Denmark, I popped in to see Mads and after a terrific meal, we spent a few hours talking tools. Time passes quickly when you’re in good company and all too soon it seems, I was on the last train back to my hotel. During the evening Mads presented me with a present – a MAFE original marking knife, which as you can see, came with a smile. Mads made the knife to use Exacto blades, so eventually after many sharpenings, I will be able to replace the blade...
Last Friday was special day for me. A fellow Lumberjock and his girlfriend, dropped in on us for a visit. David (FaTToaD) and Meredith went back east for the holidays and came home loaded down with goodies. We had a good visit (for my part anyway, I couldn’t shut up long enough for him to say much) lol and it was a pleasure meeting Meredith. Note to David; She’s a keeper. When he left, he gave me some Tupelo gum boards to see what I thought of them. When I figure out what I want to ...
