This story starts on a Saturday morning when I got a Facebook message from my friend Rob. “We are having a yard sale and there are a ton of old tools” Rob said. So ofcourse I got in my car and headed over there. I found a lot of great old tools but this week we will focus on the Level I found, It’s a Stanley No. 104 Level 18” long. This will make a great restoration project I thought… I made a video of the restoration as well, you can see it here: View on Yo...
The goal is to get a finish similar to this from groovyman6. Sample boads are rift sawn white oak, first dyed with Transtint Brown Mahogany, either at 1 to 32 dilution (two thinner bands) or at 1 to 15 (three thicker bands): (photo taken in the shade) After the dye dried, I lightly sanded the darker bands with either grit 600 (the top one) or 220 (the bottom one), then applied Minwax Tung Oil Finish per instructions and then, next day, one board was stained with Minwax Mahogany Gel S...

Back-tracked, spoke to several people, got some advice from The Woodwhisperer (Thanks, Marc!), and have a test board that looks promising. Color isn’t quite right, but you’ll get the idea… What I learned so far: Gel stains are good because the do cover so evenly Gel stains cover so evenly over waxy or de-waxed shellac – Norm’s process doesn’t work here The 1/8” masking tape does well to cover the inlay during staining, but comes up eas...
A deep red mahogany finish doesn’t have to be the result of a complicated process. I’ll show you how I use a simple two-step method to revitalize my mother in law’s old beat up rocking char. First, a coat of General Finishes Merlot Water-Based Dye. Second, a coat of General Finishes Brown Mahogany Gel Stain. Its all finished off with a nice satin lacquer topcoat. Topics Covered: Application tips for water-based dyes Application tips for gel stains The co...
This is my first project since joining the site, and my second woodworking project overall. Last week, I completed the Kreg workbench so I’d have an area to build other projects on. After seeing the shoerack built by mckenziedrums here: _http://lumberjocks.com/projects/26304_ I liked the project so well, I thought I’d try to closely reproduce it, with a few changes of my own. I didn’t have, nor did I want to purchase any curly maple. I also just picked up a couple c...
