Carving a Ball and Claw Foot

121 days ago by John Fry | 18 comments »

First I want to thank everyone who visited and responded to my last project blog; A walnut sofa table with Jacobean influences As always, your comments AND critiques are welcome! I recently completed a commissioned wing back chair for a very petite lady. It has a lot of carving detail so I though I would post one of the carving elements as a tutorial because this was almost a “project” of its own. This chair has ball and claw feet on the front legs, and the clients liked the unde...

399 days ago by David | 23 comments »

1 • 1 • 2 • 3 • 5 • 8 • 13 • 21 • 34 – The Fibonacci Sequence I have been fascinated with The Fibonacci Sequence and The Golden Rectangle for some time. I finally got around to building a Fibonacci Gauge that was featured in WOOD Magazine. The guage maintains a consatnt proportion of 1:1.618 between the points. It is used to help determine visually appealing proportional dimensions. I am looking forward to using the guage in future projects. Follow the text below for so...

This very large, commissioned credenza was designed as an entertainment center to sit below a big, wall mounted, plasma TV. It is 76” wide 24-1/2” deep, and 34” tall. The cabinet and base are all solid walnut and the doors are bookmatched walnut burl veneers both inside and out. The final act… Buffing the final coat of finish is the moment of birth for a project. After that it is carefully wrapped and delivered to start its’ life with family, friend, or client. One part of the woodworking process that most of us don’t figure in is the photography. I can tell you from experience that this a very important part of furniture making. It is not an option if you are planning on doing woodworking and furniture as a business, be it full or part time....

"Hobbit Holes in MyWorld" --by RusticWoodArt #26: Drupes and Drupaceous Nuts as Tung Oil

7 days ago by frank | 15 comments »

Drupes and Drupaceous Nuts as Tung Oil So lets cut to the center of the fruit….like cutting to the quick, and talk about China Wood Oil, wood nut oil or just plain ‘tung oil’. And since we’re talking in the language of botany, maybe it would be best too first say that tung oil is not a true nut, but is a fruit that comes to us as a drupe or what is also called ‘stone fruit’. Definition of a drupe….stone fruit is: ’’a one-seeded indehisc...

Corner Bookshelf

140 days ago by Chips | 5 comments »

When I read about challenge 04 in Popular Woodworking Newsletter my first thought was to give it a try. The next thought was to design something that didn’t look like a box. Then I remembered that I had turned a square book case 45 degrees and put it into a corner. From there I took inspiration from other project I have built. A Corner Pantry Cabinet I built for my daughter and a reproduction of a 200 year old spice box that I built for my wife. When you add to that my enjoyment of carving...

Beauties of Wood ....i am the breeze that carouses through your veins of wood, where in the distance my imaging gives freely to any who taste, taste and see that ‘just as’ i am likened with life at dusk, so ‘just is’ the assurance also that come my dawn i will be therein…. —-how many ways can i speak of the beauties of wood, where out of the classroom of my workshop i bear forward to an engagement, i am enabled to continue this romance that so cap...

Developing Authentic Expectations While Working With Commission Customers

463 days ago by Mark DeCou | 6 comments »

I have moved this information over from the Church Lectern project as I think it cleans up the Project Posting better, as most of this extra information was really just Blogging material. So, if you read this information in the Project Posting, then there is nothing new here. Let me know what questions you have, and I would also enjoy hearing tips from each of you on how you work with clients. I’m just figuring this out myself, so I have a lot to learn.- – - – - – -...

In Search of Imaginations Greatest Dream ....i am impressed with the beauty of this day,and so i tell a tale of create-create-create,were it not for dreamers such as those who engender, would not the world re-main in the shadows of darker past…. ....creation awaits the dawning of new day suns, just as each moment breathes in the aroma of a fresh breath, expelling all those traditions that keeps one’s mind in chains, and so i live with the awakening dawn of imaginations greatest ...

Glamdring and The Chainsaw Milling of Pine ....and so twas on one of my visits into the deep woods, that i heard the tales of this sword beater called glamdring, for in the presence of trees and all that speaks of wood,i first was made aware of the weaponsmith’s of gondolin…. —-these were//are they who first learned the lineage of steel, and how to work the metals needed to hold an edge in wood, were as the times of woodworking continue in the landscape here, i sought...
