My wife and I are expecting our first child in February. This after 2 years of trying. Needless to say, we are very excited. This, of course, is my chance to build some baby furniture and spend a little time in the shop that isn’t work related. No real deadlines, and the freedom to use all of the creativity I want. What could be better.
There is one other reason I’m building these 2 items. I’d really like to build something that my daughter will have when she gets married...

Feeding the Belly of the Beast

I’ve recently been doing some reading on various designers in search of guidance and inspiration. Sam Maloof has always been one of my favorites. In doing so, I came across some quotes from Maloof that express some of his philosophies on woodworking and design. In this post on my blog I explore these and share some of my thoughts on them. I’m in the midst of finishing up a project I have really enjoyed. Sure, it has taken me two times the hours I bid, but I am happy with the result. Actually, it has come out better than I expected, which is always a nice surprise.
This is a functional-art piece I wish I wasn’t selling, to be honest. But, I have already spent all of the down payment. So, giving the money back is not possible, so the customer will get her desk.

About a month ago I received a phone call asking if I would demonstrate the Art of Scrimshaw at the Senior Center in Marion, KS. The lady that called said that she has held onto a brochure of mine since 2003 that someone had given her then, and so she decided to see if I would come and talk to the group.

For the most part the design process is left to me on the furniture I build. The customer just gives me a general idea and I go with it. There is the occasion that the customer would like or needs to have their hand in the designing process.

Bathroom furniture The bathroom furniture is made for my daughter and son in law and adapted to a relative small room. Not to bee dominate in the small room the countertop of the furniture is gently curved. The appearance will then be a little softer.The furniture is made in white oak, with base-cabinets made of baltic birch.The finish is one layer of boiled linseed oil, 3 layers of shellac and on the top 3 layers of satin varnish.
