Baby's First Furniture #1: Baby's First Furniture - The Plan.

385 days ago by Bob_B | 1 comment »

My wife and I are expecting our first child in February. This after 2 years of trying. Needless to say, we are very excited. This, of course, is my chance to build some baby furniture and spend a little time in the shop that isn’t work related. No real deadlines, and the freedom to use all of the creativity I want. What could be better. There is one other reason I’m building these 2 items. I’d really like to build something that my daughter will have when she gets married...

"Feeding the Belly of the Beast" --by RusticWoodArt

400 days ago by frank | 6 comments »

Feeding the Belly of the Beast ....so being true to my nature, I knew it was time to stop being cold and so last night was the initial first light, of feeding the ‘belly of the beast’. Been way busy around here as of late, workin’ mostly outside and farther on down in the forest of woods. So not much time for posting, but I have been gathering a lot of outside wood photos for future blog stories and also for winter gazing when I need to escape the realities of all that...

The Craftsman's Path #11: Sam Maloof on design

403 days ago by Mark Mazzo | 0 comments »

I’ve recently been doing some reading on various designers in search of guidance and inspiration. Sam Maloof has always been one of my favorites. In doing so, I came across some quotes from Maloof that express some of his philosophies on woodworking and design. In this post on my blog I explore these and share some of my thoughts on them. I’d be interested in hearing the perspectives on this subject from all of you LumberJocks out there. Thanks for reading!

Airbrushing my Birger Sandzen-Inspired Carving for the Tilt-Front Laptop Computer Desk

404 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 16 comments »

I’m in the midst of finishing up a project I have really enjoyed. Sure, it has taken me two times the hours I bid, but I am happy with the result. Actually, it has come out better than I expected, which is always a nice surprise. This is a functional-art piece I wish I wasn’t selling, to be honest. But, I have already spent all of the down payment. So, giving the money back is not possible, so the customer will get her desk. There have been a few pieces I wish I could ha...

"Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner"; a Scrimshaw Art Demonstration at the Senior Center

420 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 14 comments »

About a month ago I received a phone call asking if I would demonstrate the Art of Scrimshaw at the Senior Center in Marion, KS. The lady that called said that she has held onto a brochure of mine since 2003 that someone had given her then, and so she decided to see if I would come and talk to the group. I asked a bunch of questions, and for some reason had it sunk in my mind that we were talking about the nursing home crowd for the demonstration. I haven’t been to a nursing home much si...

Interactive Design

431 days ago by Chris Davis | 3 comments »

For the most part the design process is left to me on the furniture I build. The customer just gives me a general idea and I go with it. There is the occasion that the customer would like or needs to have their hand in the designing process. Case in point, I have a Murphy wall bed customer that ordered my Euro Murphy bed. They wanted to change it up a little by adding a few extra rectangle blocks. She had an idea of what she wanted and thought it look good on paper. After temporar...

Mahogany Table #1: A victim of table abuse

459 days ago by johnnybwood | 7 comments »

This project is a great example of the following old adage: “No good deed goes unpunished.” A while back I was at church on Sunday morning. During coffee hour my wife was saying things like “You remember John, don’t you?” while I was talking with a few people. A rather subtle approach, I admit, but it got me thinking. Maybe I’d better do something to offset the somewhat irregular nature of my attendance. I noticed that a small side table in the paris...
