Woo Hoo, Part Deux #2: There's gold in them thar logs!

422 days ago by Douglas Bordner | 25 comments »

The story, for those unfamilar with the first entry, is that I was driving through the neighborhood. Truth be told I had the feeling there was going to be something I was going to find. Highly developed “Free-dar”. I happened upon a yard with the entire length of the sidewalk lined with quartered log sections of a massive maple tree and a sign exhorting me to take all I wanted. I was frustrated because most of the sections were massive. And when I went to toss one in the bed of th...

Scoooore! Maple quarter log sections/bowl blanks

439 days ago by Douglas Bordner | 12 comments »

Two beauties. The fellow that had these as freebies in the front yard had both sides of the sidewalk lined with logs and log sections, with more in the back. These were the extent of what I could lift, each about 80-90 lbs. Looks to me to be rock maple. The tree he took down was three foot in diameter easily, not sure how tall it was. Absolute worst ca...

Given my recent success with my carving projects. Granted they are simple and beginner level which fits me at this point. However, I have decided to up the ante and create a whole new set of challenges for my self. The photo below represents about six hours worth of work in layout, rough out and finally picking up a gouge. The piece is about 6 3/4” by about 8 1/2”. It is being made from a piece of 2×12 SPF that used to be a leveling block under our TV set in our old ho...

Craft Shows #1: Craft show season begins

619 days ago by JTRid43 | 2 comments »

Hello everyone. Well, I’m not really big on the blog thing. Just a personal issue on my part. But this group is all about wood working and helping eachother in our craft. The craft show season in upon us and I have been very busy making things for the show. A very simple shakers bench, nesting tables, mosaic tile table, a charging station for cell phones and other items and if I have time, a shaker shelf. I like the shaker style items for the craft show. Made simple and out of pine w...
