Free Wood #2: Oak Plant Stand

12-23-2015 05:03 PM by Dave Rutan | 4 comments »

Coming home from Church on Sunday I passed this plant stand, out for the trash, not far from my house. Needless to say I walked out and took a look. It is made of solid, 1 inch by 1 1/2 inch oak. It came apart into 2 frame pieces by removing 4 screws on the bottom. Some flexing broke the doweled joints. This is what I got. The long bits have a useful 22 inches of solid oak between the dowel holes.

Lost & Found: The Literal Splinter in the Sawdust Stack.

Well, I was getting ready to assemble a 16×20 frame, when I realized that the woman who ordered it needed to give input on the finish. While inspecting it, a piece just fell off with the sligtest tough from my finger. I didn’t think too much about it and threw it somewhere. After showing my wife, her first response was, what happened there? Well, I thought it made it look more rustic, but apparently too rustic because that was the first response of the woman I was selling...

Rescued Wood #5: Junk Pile Find

12-20-2009 11:12 PM by PG_Zac | 11 comments »

My wife found some long lengths of really grotty looking wood in the junk pile left behind by the previous tenants of the farm, and decided to use them to build a platform in a tree for the goat. She asked me to cut one of the lengths for her, so I did. When I saw the inside, I was seriously intrigued by the rich pink colour that showed in the cut, so I cleaned up the off-cut piece to get a better look. Here is an uncleaned piece next to a cleaned piece..Needless to say, I have confisc...

Woo Hoo, Part Deux #2: There's gold in them thar logs!

11-13-2007 07:19 AM by Douglas Bordner | 25 comments »

The story, for those unfamilar with the first entry, is that I was driving through the neighborhood. Truth be told I had the feeling there was going to be something I was going to find. Highly developed “Free-dar”. I happened upon a yard with the entire length of the sidewalk lined with quartered log sections of a massive maple tree and a sign exhorting me to take all I wanted. I was frustrated because most of the sections were massive. And when I went to toss one in the bed of th...

Scoooore! Maple quarter log sections/bowl blanks

10-28-2007 12:16 AM by Douglas Bordner | 12 comments »

Two beauties. The fellow that had these as freebies in the front yard had both sides of the sidewalk lined with logs and log sections, with more in the back. These were the extent of what I could lift, each about 80-90 lbs. Looks to me to be rock maple. The tree he took down was three foot in diameter easily, not sure how tall it was. Thank you stranger, thank you majestic tree, sorry you had to come down. I will be reverent in handling your leavings. Where is the Cyber Bowl Blank Share condu...

Found Wood

10-25-2007 12:26 PM by Dekker | 10 comments »

Today is a good day, and it’s only 6:00am Just this morning picked up two small boxes of leftover cherry hardwood flooring cutoffs. They are 2-6 inches long, with a couple 2-footers. I got them through my local FreeCycle organization. I had put out a “wanted” poster for leftover hardwood flooring, fully expecting to get some oak, but the first response I had was for 3/4” t&g cherry! I don’t really know what I’ll do with them yet. Absolute worst ca...

Green Man #1: The beginning

08-28-2007 04:47 AM by Buckskin | 5 comments »

Given my recent success with my carving projects. Granted they are simple and beginner level which fits me at this point. However, I have decided to up the ante and create a whole new set of challenges for my self. The photo below represents about six hours worth of work in layout, rough out and finally picking up a gouge. The piece is about 6 3/4” by about 8 1/2”. It is being made from a piece of 2×12 SPF that used to be a leveling block under our TV set in our old ho...

Craft Shows #1: Craft show season begins

04-30-2007 06:41 PM by JTRid43 | 2 comments »

Hello everyone. Well, I’m not really big on the blog thing. Just a personal issue on my part. But this group is all about wood working and helping eachother in our craft. The craft show season in upon us and I have been very busy making things for the show. A very simple shakers bench, nesting tables, mosaic tile table, a charging station for cell phones and other items and if I have time, a shaker shelf. I like the shaker style items for the craft show. Made simple and out of pine w...
