Going full time at working with your woodworking tools is quite a daunting task. It was, and still is for me. I get quite a few emails, visitors, and phone calls from other folks, so I know it is daunting for everyone that considers it. I try to be honest with them, about the cost and benefits.

Another short Blog entry to post a concept sketch of a President Barak Obama Walking Cane. This cane design has been inspired by several historical examples of Election and Political Figure “Bust Top” collector walking canes.
I have another design I’m working on the concept sketch for with an “Abraham Lincoln Bust Top” walking cane, and he’s deceased, and so that can not be determined as “politics”, just art. Ha.

Over in the Forum, there is a question about Going Pro with woodworking, and what should be considered. The Forum Writer stated to “be honest.”

Making better use of you time includes making jigs that can be used in different ways, or positions.
The first series of photos show the jig used to cut the dovetail slot into the post, to receive the legs. This had a knob to tighten to prevent the post from spinning.
The second set of photos were the jig for carving the post. This too, proved to be very helpful. It has boards on the back side that fit snugly over my bench top, while held tight in the vise.

This is the jig that really should have been the first of the series. I have to lay out the story a bit. Let’s just say that I am 3-D challenged. I started off to make a batch of mitered feet for jewelry boxes. I used the table saw and jointer to make a long strip of wood with a 45° chamfer on one edge, about 36” long x 3” wide x .5” thick. The other day I posted a couple of projects where I used some reddish-white wood, that we around here call “Cedar.” I don’t know what the species name is, some say Western Red, some Say Eastern Red, so I don’t know for sure.

Almost ready for a dry fit. Got every thing mortised and tenons cut still have one more mortise to cut for the strechers on the legs and i’LL dry fit it. Still a lot of sanding and staining. I even have the strips of ebony cut last night. still have to cut into 1/4 in. lengths, but I think I’m gonna make them just a tad longer. I’m finding a lot of brown streaking in the ebony, is that normal? Just the type of ebony I have? Anyway I’m gonna have to dye with a dark mark...
