I do a fair bit of layout work with a pencil. I find it’s a quick way to figure things out on a unique project, or a unique piece of wood that you want to get all the cuts “just right”. Normally, I use a combination square as a pencil gauge when I am trying to get the width of a workpiece. Old Tools #1: Folding Rule Fiasco--an Appeal for Help

I got my folding rule from Walt. Anyway, i should have taken a ‘before’ shot. I decided to clean it, and i ended up messing it up, i think. Is it beyond repair? I saw this entry from Chris Schwarz, but i can’t get any Borax here, or oxallic acid. So i am turning to you, my LJ buddies for help!
