Bandsaw's bite

2541 days ago by DataDoc | 22 comments »

No matter how careful you think you are, when you feel the thunk of the blade as it catches on the bone means it’s too late. I reached to brush away a cutoff and got my thumb snagged in the blade. With my wife’s assistance I got it bandaged up, and then sat around all afternoon holding my hand up to relieve the pounding in my thumb. Three Ibuprofen and 30 minutes later I had relief. Now all I feel is stupid.

Learning #1: My "first" project

1103 days ago by Rha7 | 11 comments »

My wife saw a coffee table like this in a magazine, and asked if I could make one for her… the answer was of course “hell, yeah, your husband can build a fort for you”, but in the mean time, I was thinking, man, she knows the only thing I’ve done is an unintenationally skewed cabinet for the bathroom, that she doesn’t seem to notice, doesn’t care, or just doesn’t mention it. Anyway, I set out to buy the MDF sheet (up to today this is the only mater...

The Daughter of a Woodworker - My First Woodworking Experience

494 days ago by Chris Mobley | 8 comments »

My daughter wrote this article for my website and I thought I would share it with you all! Written By: Bonnie Bartay Some of my favorite memories as a young kid are spending time with my dad in his workshop. From a very young age, I remember playing in his shop while he worked. As an adult, I have helped my father with his construction business and now with Chris Mobley Designs. I do all of the paperwork part and even draw out plans but he does the real magic. I have never actually done...

Lathes and Turning #2: My first finished project!

1147 days ago by swamps42 | 6 comments »

I’ve been trying very hard to create a honey dipper, but since I don’t have an appropriate parting tool, it’s next to impossible. I have gotten very good at turning a square 2″x2″ bit of super cheap construction lumber into 10″ long dowels that are about 2″ diameter. I’m also very good at making saw dust. Today I completed my first finished lathe project, the first project that didn’t explode before I was done making it! I made a nostepinne, which is a bit less involved than a honey dipper...

First wooden hand plane #1: beginning!

1892 days ago by TheBigCheese231 | 6 comments »

I bought a board of 3/4 beech. I chopped four pieces of it and glued it up. I’ve been wanting to make one of these for a while now. My dad is helping me with parts as I am still not allowed to use the tablesaw. This is going to take a while because of school and other priorities. Im going to bed the iron at 50 degrees. Its going to be my hybrid of a coffin smoother and a krenov style plane. I hope to get to actually shaping of it soon.

Jake's chair #7: Drumroll please..........

754 days ago by James Alberding | 5 comments »

The other night I ate a fortune cookie and thought, hmm this one is accurate…. How did that cookie know I would be writing about accomplishing my first furniture build? I had fun building this chair. And now I’m going to be focusing on making it easier to build the next ones. I would like some input on what everyone’s opinions on what wood they think is best for outdoor furniture like this, and what looks best. I’m going to try cedar for the next one. If you ...

My First Shutters #1: Here I am so far ...

911 days ago by Rha7 | 3 comments »

I read an article somewhere that said “if you’re a beginner you shouldn’t try to make your own shutters, it is a very difficult work that should be left to professionals” ... as stubborn as Iam, it looked like the right project to tackle on my learning travel … So, here I am so far, It is make of Pine ($$$ cost effective), and I’m using oil+wax as a finish, by request from my wife that saw me once trying it on a piece of scrap wood to see how it looked. ...

Entertainment Center #1: First Big Project

474 days ago by cjwelch | 1 comment »

I started this project for a friend a few months ago and will be putting the finishing touches on soon. It is a plywood box with pine face frame. I used my Kreg Jig for all the joints. This is the largest project I have tackled to date and has been a great learning experience. The plan has changed from the original drawings as we learned along the way. My wife might be a little upset that I have spent at least four times the cost of materials in new tools (and then some). I tell her it is an ...
