I have not followed up on my plane making series as I promised, sorry. This is an addition, but not very much wood related either. I hope no one feels it is too off subject. Another jock (zebrano) posted a knife handle and sheath he made as a project, it prompted me to blog this knife.
EDIT: THERE IS PLANE IRON INFO ADDED AFTER THE KNIFE
I made this for my brother. He is left handed and there is actually a right-left handed sushi knife. He lives on a boat (50’ Hatteras motor yacht...

I’ve got a smile from ear to ear. We finally took a ride and picked out the cushions and material for the chair today. Suzanne should get started Monday or Tuesday. I may have a finished chair by next weekend.
I’ve tested out some different combinations for the cushions and decided on 5” of high density foam with 2” of a softer foam on top for the seat, The back will be 5” of soft foam. Each will be wrapped in batting to soften the edge.
I’m looking ...

Application of Wax on top of another medium.
Before we get too much into this part, there are a few things we have to consider about the wood we are using for our project, especially if we want a high shine on the project.
OPEN/CLOSE GRAINSome woods, such as Oak, Mahogany and Walnut have what is called “open grain”, whilst others like Cherry, Maple and Birch have what is called “close grain”. The open grain woods, if not treated correctly will always give an interrupted surface, such a...

This is a blog requested by Douglas Bordner. Midnight Serenade started as an ordinary piece of straight grain oak. I carved an unusual shape to try and bring some interest to the grain. After shaping and sanding, this piece almost receive a traditional finish. The wood and grain were beautiful, but Douglas had a request that needed to be fulfilled.
The next step was to apply two coats of Fiebing’s black leather dye. You could also use this technique to ebonize a piece.

I’ve made a few minor changes to the deck plan.
We should start building it next week.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~You may notice that I learned to apply the plan to image a lot better. Practice! practice! The corner support pipe also looks much better with a darker paint.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~I modified the stair railing.
Well I finally got started with some finish late today. Just wiped on the 1st coat of Watco…I’m using the natural. I like what I see but I’m not sure if I want to add some contrast or not. I also STILL have some glue spots and scratches showing. I’m planning on hitting the spots again with 220 and then doing everything with 400 before the second coat.
We didn’t get out to get foam or upholstery fabric this weekend so the final fini...
Sharpening and using a scraper.
When I suggest that you should use a scraper in your woodworking. Some are going to say “What?” Others are going to say “I’ve tried it and it doesn’t work!” And maybe others are going to say “I use them every day!” To the latter I’d say “Get a life!” To the previous I’d say “Hang on and we’ll fix your problems!” And to the first I’d say:
Scrapers have been used in woodworking for a long time. It is believed that the earliest scrapers were made out of pie...
