Custom Dishwasher Panel Progress #6: Finishing the Dishwasher Panel

754 days ago by gizmodyne | 13 comments »

100 steps to a great finishI have written about finishing douglas fir before, but I keep getting lots of questions about it so here I go. Sand to 220. Get in the grooves. Making the washcoat to prevent blotching .. 90% Mineral Spirits Washcoat Part 2: 10% Boiled Linseed Oil Apply Washcoat with cloth. Inspecting the coat. If there are any sanding marks or glue spots this is the time to get them. Applying stain with brush. Clean off. Get into the grooves with a glue brus...

Project - Lever-Action Boxes #4: Starting the Finishing

764 days ago by Dekker | 8 comments »

Since I don’t have one of those fancy japanese saw blades with no set, I sanded the keys off with 100 grit (being careful to stop before touching the box), then taking the rest off with 150 grit and finishing the entire box with 220. Of course, I decided to take it one step further, and I went over it again very gently with 320 grit. I then did a quick vacuuming of my work area, and got things prepared. The end of this pair of boxes is now in sight. Here you can see the two boxes lai...

Finishing Wisdom #2: Long awaited update

774 days ago by USCJeff | 3 comments »

It’s been a while since I’ve put some things I’ve learned in writing. I like the idea of blogs as a type of woodworking journal. It seems I see a lot of cool tricks and tips in articles and forget them pretty quickly. I just got to the point in my woodworking self-education that I now understand that finishing is really what makes the difference b/w good projects and great projects. I’ve done a ton of experimenting over the last few weeks and had a wide range of re...

Finishing #2: -- Accenting grain on Black Ash

843 days ago by Hawgnutz | 7 comments »

I got some Black Ash with some great figuring. I read that to get the darker figuring to pop out, I should paint the ash with green carfts paint, then strip the paint off, then finish it. Any comments? It seems strange to paint it with GREEN paint to bring out the figuring! I plan to use a rub-on poly to finish it. Any suggestions on how to strip the green paint off? Should I use a chemical stripper, or just sand it, or plane it, or uise a scraper? After all, it is just water-based...

Morris inspired chair #10: I'm ready for my close up Mr Deville.

880 days ago by Bob Babcock | 22 comments »

I’ve got a smile from ear to ear. We finally took a ride and picked out the cushions and material for the chair today. Suzanne should get started Monday or Tuesday. I may have a finished chair by next weekend. I’ve tested out some different combinations for the cushions and decided on 5” of high density foam with 2” of a softer foam on top for the seat, The back will be 5” of soft foam. Each will be wrapped in batting to soften the edge. I’m looking ...

Some things that I've learned about finishing. Some of them I also use. #2: Home made wood fillers, Pumice and Rottenstone.

887 days ago by Karson | 14 comments »

Pumice and Rottenstone as wood filler. When you go through the catalogs and look at all of the finished that are available, you will not see this tip. They sell you Pumice and Rottenstone to be used as a buffing and polishing agent to bring up a gloss on the surface, but no one tells you about using it as wood filler. The interesting thing about Pumice is it is basically transparent so if you use it as wood filler it doesn’t contribute any different colors to the wood that it’s being us...

Some things that I've learned about finishing. Some of them I also use. #1: Using Scrapers

888 days ago by Karson | 16 comments »

Sharpening and using a scraper. When I suggest that you should use a scraper in your woodworking. Some are going to say “What?” Others are going to say “I’ve tried it and it doesn’t work!” And maybe others are going to say “I use them every day!” To the latter I’d say “Get a life!” To the previous I’d say “Hang on and we’ll fix your problems!” And to the first I’d say: Scrapers have been used in woodworking for a long time. It is believed that the earliest scrapers were made out of pie...

Morris inspired chair #8: Watco No. 1 goes on

893 days ago by Bob Babcock | 13 comments »

Well I finally got started with some finish late today. Just wiped on the 1st coat of Watco…I’m using the natural. I like what I see but I’m not sure if I want to add some contrast or not. I also STILL have some glue spots and scratches showing. I’m planning on hitting the spots again with 220 and then doing everything with 400 before the second coat. Watco No. 1 From side. We didn’t get out to get foam or upholstery fabric this weekend so the final fini...

Craftsman - Stickley Projects #4: Finishing Advise

909 days ago by Paul | 2 comments »

I should be able to post pictures of the twin in the next couple of days and then start the drawers (I cut a bunch of rough parts for the drawers yesterday), but I’m starting to think ahead to finishing. I’m concerned about the solid red oak taking the stain differently than the red oak ply. Any advise? 1. I plan on testing it out with a scrap of each first.2. Experience or advise on fillers for porous oak? I haven’t tried fillers before.3. When I stopped by the Rock...

back to the box #5: my trip on the waterslide

953 days ago by scottb | 13 comments »

Finally got to the point where I could try the waterslide transfer decals out. David’s instructions were much clearer than what came with the product. Having already used a different first coat, than in his demo (oops), and not being sure of compatability issues (not to mention wanting to wait for a few coats of spray finish to dry) I tried using them unprotected (as per the manufacturers instructions). They worked great – slid off perfectly. I didn’t find them too ...
