these are two spoons i made for a friend of mine in Arizona, one is a ladle and the other is a spoon, the ladle is made from red cedar and the spoon is made from sassafras , i used my scroll saw to cut part of the shape, then i used my dremel, my foredom and hand chisels to create the hollowed out portions, these were the first kitchen items i have made and they were fun, although taxing for someone who has carpel tunnel or arthritis…but they were enjoyable to make and certainly enjoya...

Polyurethane is a clear finish topcoat for wood that offers long-lasting protection and also moves with the wood. Ok, I’ve been busy with life and could only get to the violin as weather permitted, that is until I insulated the garage and installed an IR heat lamp which takes the chill off the air.
This is the maple back. I’ve carved guides using templates I made out of aluminum. After aligning the guides to the plate surface it’s a simple matter of carving away the excess and blending. There are 6 templates. 1 through 5 are horizontal left to right with the last spanning the length....

Nothing’s finished but I have three little boys so it might be 18 years or so but the sanding is done! Can anyone tell me how to get a good staining on a commercially available wood putty like Elmers?
Several years ago I stopped using and substituted a glue and sawdust mixture on any projects where the repair would show and appearance mattered. Appearance almost always matters on my project, if only to me.
I recently found myself using the commercially made putty while refinishing a floor and as normal, it stood out and would not accept enough color to allow for a match. I am not happy...

Applying a finish to your completed chip carving is a “make or break” step. Do it well and your chip carving comes to life and is something wonderful to behold. Do it poorly and your carving loses the beauty and the finish detracts from the chip carved design. After nearly six month without posting, today I’ve posted some projects. Pitifully it’s probably my swan’s cry: in a very few weeks I’ll have to close my workshop, because of the severe crisis we suffer.
