“Wax on; Wax off”—do you or don’t you? (use wax as part of your finishing process) (And why/why not)
I will mostly post pics in this one. By now, if you have followed at all you have gathered that I suck at blogging. A writer I will never be. Some technical data. Final dimensions are 81 1/2” long, 27 1/4” wide and 35 1/5” tall. Species are Walnut and Birch. Pulled off the double through tenons, albeit not perfectly. Nothing a few little wedges couldn’t fix. I feel the bench to be a good reflection of me. A little unusual, not too crazy, has some flaws, functi...
Why don’t the high end brass hinges for boxes, small cabinets, etc. come with screws? The hinges are great but this makes you go out and find the correct sized brass screw. And the screws are too damn soft and break off. I’m not trying to be a brute with them. I drill an appropriate sized pilot hole on a test piece of wood first to make sure the screw will glide in and out without breaking. I usually tap the hole with a steel screw to be on the safe side. And then I screw ...
Well folks! It’s finally done! This took a little longer than expected, because of the weather, & things. It’s amazing that it looks just like the SketchUp plan, but I think a tad better looking though. My Son, & his family really love it. It’s almost like a new room on their house. I also learned about the new way of staining treated lumber. They don’t recommend letting it dry out for 60 to 90 days. They say that if you treat it right a...
A while back I was reading about using vinegar and steel wool to ebonize wood – particularly Oaks. I took the last of the wife’s vinegar and and some steel wool threw them in an old peanut butter jar and set it on the shelf. Nothing seemed to be happening with it – don’t know what I was expecting, but even after a few days in solution there was not significant color change of the liquid. Yesterday, a fabulous day here in SOCAL by the way, I looked at the solution and n...
A person can spend a lot of time on a carving, but after the final cut with your chisel, you don’t really know what all of the chiseling you’ve done really looks like. You have to choose a finish that will enhance your carving. On some carvings I use a stain, others, just a clear finish, it all depends on the theme, or type of wood you’re using. I’ve chosen some images of my mining scene to show you the difference of before, & after. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~...
I guess I’ve been poking along on this project long enough now. Here are some more pictures of my progress for you.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Sawing the Fonts, & backs of the drawers.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~I drilled holes at the drawer bottoms, because of the short sawing radius. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Gluing the drawer fronts, & backs. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~...
I’ve got a smile from ear to ear. We finally took a ride and picked out the cushions and material for the chair today. Suzanne should get started Monday or Tuesday. I may have a finished chair by next weekend. I’ve tested out some different combinations for the cushions and decided on 5” of high density foam with 2” of a softer foam on top for the seat, The back will be 5” of soft foam. Each will be wrapped in batting to soften the edge. I’m looking ...
Anyone have any experience applying brushable lacquer over a de-waxed shellac? I’m under the impression you can put just about anything but polyurethane over shellac. This happens to be going on an solid ash table top. Two coats de-waxed shellac were already applied, scuffed and now ready for a topcoat. Thx
