It all began when I was building my workbench (blogged here). I was using my first (dedicated woodworking tool purchased) #5 BORG buck-bros Jack plane and it broke. It was working quite well after I learned to tune it, but the materials it is made of are just too weak and flimsy and the yoke that controls the blade travel just broke and became useless:
I was bummed, but hey it was a good learning experience, and I have been keeping an eye open for a replacement #5 ever since. not reall...

Well, I was getting ready to assemble a 16×20 frame, when I realized that the woman who ordered it needed to give input on the finish.
While inspecting it, a piece just fell off with the sligtest tough from my finger. I didn’t think too much about it and threw it somewhere.
After showing my wife, her first response was, what happened there? Well, I thought it made it look more rustic, but apparently too rustic because that was the first response of the woman I was selling...

Sheesh. Good thing I have a truck now.
I saw a note on craigslist today (online classifieds) that a guy had put “10 to 15 more” eucalyptus logs out in the alleyway behind his house. LA is all blocks split in half by access alleys big enough to drive 2 cars through (barely). The Google directions were a little wonky (didn’t name one of the roads, had me lost for an hour), and so a 47mi. round trip turned into a 75mi. round trip, and there were an incredible number of cop d...

“The inner compasses of the mind must encircle the whole quantity of material beforehand” – medieval poet Geoffrey de Vinsauf.
Here’s a few before shots, as in before I know what I want to make with them….
..and…
That’s a soda can in the middle for reference…
• In the forefront are two old pieces of wood that I found next to a creek, they may be old bridge boards as they had several 20 penny nails in them, are almost 3 inches thick, almost 12 inches wide and...

After a seemingly successful beach driftwood project earlier this summer, I knew that the next trip to the beach would include a hunt for more treasures, perhaps even ones of the slightly buried variety. Again the family returned to Sargent and again the Texas tides did not disappoint.
My wife actually went to the beach with the kiddos a day prior to me and upon seeing her later that evening; she said “I saw a piece of wood you may be interested in.” “Cool!” I said, thinking that I have ...
