Completion of this neat little feature took me longer than expected. I wanted to raise my bar as always and spent most of the time thinking and rethinking again. I’ve finally started to work on the plan this week and am proud to announce the addition of Favorites to LumberJocks today. As you may expect you can add any type of post – project, blog entry, forum topic or workshop – to your favorites list. You can find shining button on each post page. Click on it and short ...
You can finally enjoy the result of my latest work. We got MUCH IMPROVED personal home pages here on the LumberJocks as well as better organization of the profile and account editing. The former personal homes were not visually appealing and displayed only minimal amount of content. On the other hand, new ones have rich 3-column layout with lots of info about you and your activity on LumberJocks. I believe they represent something you can be proud of and are worth sharing with your friends...
This may appear to be a small 5 minute job, however this upgrade took me a number of hours…I hope you enjoy the shorter LJ links: Yes, all personal LJ links have been changed from lumberjocks.com/jocks/nickname to lumberjocks.com/nickname format. This is also reflected in your personal projects, blogs etc. links (ex: lumberjocks.com/nickname/blog). Old links will still work to ensure backwards compatibility. I’m off to update my email signatures now…
The recent happenings in the forums made me think seriously about the future of LumberJocks. This website has been built on the foundation of woodworking projects and knowledge sharing instead of general chat site for those that just want to buddy around. I came to a conclusion that these two principal differences cannot coexist under one roof. I had to make this tough decision as soon as possible before it is too late. And I decided to go back to the roots of what made LumberJocks so spec...
I know we all love fancy time-savers.. don’t we? How would you love accessing your pictures or videos (maintained on the third party dedicated sites) directly below the text area when writing your loooong blog entry, project story or even new comment. Well, now this is possible here on the LumberJocks through our embedded mini-browser. You don’t need to open new window to paste in that picture anymore – do it 5 times per post and you’ll see how tedious this can be ;...
Just a short notice… number of our active forums has just increased to nine. I’ve added a new one: Wood & LumberDifferent wood requires different woodworking strategies – from cutting to finishing. Share your tips and challenges here in the Wood & Lumber Forum. Thanks to Wiley for coming up with this idea.I really have no clue why I didn’t add this forum long time ago ;) Enjoy!
Woo hoo… it’s time to introduce another great new feature on our site. The idea of having separate LumberJocks section for posting reviews has been bouncing around in many discussions recently. I finally decided to turn it into reality this weekend. There was lots of brainstorming involved during recent weeks because I wanted to be sure that the system will automatically guide you when posting the review of the product that was already reviewed by other jock(s). This system ens...
As many of you noticed, our search results were becoming cluttered by the Store pages. After some research I found that it’s possible to use search refinements in the custom search tool provided by Google. Why stop with the research… I upgraded the search on our site and included following refinements: Forums Projects Blog entries Store All except store By default, search runs across all of the sections and pages. If you want more specific results just click on t...
As you may noticed we have new button on our colorful header’s toolbar. It’s name is STICKIES and it has stolen the SEARCH’s button brown color. Once you click on the STICKIES button it will reveal the list of handpicked sticky pages/posts on the site. Many of the important and essential posts got lost because the amount of fresh new content is growing each day – now we have a way to give them attention they deserve. Here is the screenshot: Enjoy!
It happened multiple times in past… and probably to you as well, at least once. You spent 15 minutes typing long and meaningful blog entry only to lose it. Right before hitting Submit button your browser crashed or you lost internet connection or something else happened. I’m sure you didn’t want to type it again. It’s frustrating and demotivating. No need to be nervous anymore. I’ve integrated autosave feature into the most important forms on the site ̵...
