Aubrey eagerly sported her tool belt with tucked-in hammer. Everything about her said, “Let’s go build something daddy!” She was ready for anything and wanted to prove she could tackle anything her brothers could – and more. The “weekend” basement remodeling project had morphed into a 2 year marathon. We’d finish one part and my lovely wife would come down the stairs oohing an aahing about how good it looked. Then I’d hear those dreaded next words “But babe, that old _ (insert “w...
Hallo to all my LJ friends! I am proud to say that I have been invited to participate in an upcoming exhibition at Strydom Gallery in the city of George, South Africa. I will be exhibiting a variety of art furniture pieces as well as sculpture. This exhibition promises to surprise, so do try to attend! I know some of you are a long way from here but I have a huge barn on the farm, space for many LJ’s! Just fly in, I’ll collect you at the airport! There are some spare benches in my shop, en...
Yesterday rain moved in late in the day and rained all night but cleared in the morning. Unfortunately that left the steep track to the beech forest impassable due to clay mud, despite serious mud chains on the 4wd. The plan was adjusted to do a local walk to view some intact native lowland forests. We visited some massive examples of Kahitakea, Matai, Miro, Red beech and silver beech. Then it was off for a leisurely hot brown beverage at the local River’s cafe before going back to...
My workplace has turned out to be a hotbed of longtime woodworkers and budding newcomers. Several of them have enrolled in the Beginning Cabinet Making Course at the Centre for Fine Woodworking in Nelson (founded by a former College of the Redwoods student). As a result they have to pass through my hometown of Murchison ( 1 1/2hr south of Nelson) and so I have put together a milling weekend to kick off their two weeks immersion into woodworking. If there is anyone in the area that I...

If anyone is in or near west LA, my local plywood shop is having one of their quarterly swap meets tomorrow morning (Feb 20th, 2010). Here’s a page on the details: http://www.andersonplywood.com/swapmeet.htm Might not be very big by some standards, but it looks like a pretty big deal for west LA. The woodworking community exists, but is pretty hidden here somewhere behind or underneath trendy clothing and juice shops.
Well, we made it through all three days of the Woodworking Show and had a great time. I think one of us even left without lightening his wallet at all so we are going to get him to a doctor quick. We did forget to take pictures except for the first day so if you want to see pictures of the booth set-up or the show you will have to look here. We had a good turnout of LumberJocks there including: Myself, Keith Shipp, blackcherry, Tim Pursell, RobertHorton, russv, Jim Ceriale, Patrick, and...
That is our booth setup. Keith Shipp (no relation but it sure is a small world) was able to bring a big TV and laptop from work so we could show people LumberJocks. We had a Powerpoint presentation we could run all the time to try to draw people in. We also figured out the Internet thing… Anyway, we were able to get on the site live and show people around also. We had a lot people stop by and pick up buttons. Some people that stopped by said they had been to LumberJocks before b...
