Walnut kitchen countertop #6: applying finish

160 days ago by harum | 0 comments »

Have tried two wood stains from Minwax on a scrap piece of walnut: “special walnut” and “golden oak”. I guess they may differ on other wood species or maybe they age differently, but right now look exactly the same after a week or so on walnut. After trying a few options for edges, I selected a simple 1/8” roundover. Anyway, I routed grooves for a miter bolt on both glue-ups, stained them and will apply Waterlox tomorrow. The stained ...

Adjustable Angle Shooting Board

322 days ago by A Slice of Wood Workshop | 5 comments »

Create a shooting board that doesn’t cut just at one angle. Using some scrap wood and a couple of bolts you can create a shooting board that cuts multiple angles. Check out the video HERE! Sorry about the “scratchy effect”. Something happened while uploading and i can’t figure out how to fix it.

Shop Made Square

353 days ago by A Slice of Wood Workshop | 8 comments »

I’ve had a hard time drawing lines across some 2×10’s recently. I made my own square out of wood. I don’t know if it will stay true, so this is a test. Please comment if you’ve made an all wooden square and let me know your outcomes. Please subscribe to my YouTube Channel.

Arts & Crafts Dining Room Set #19: Getting Back on That Sawhorse... (or Table Legs Redux)

1435 days ago by CaptainSkully | 6 comments »

It’s been months since I’ve been able to do any woodworking. I guess being busy in this economy is a good thing. I finally got a couple of days in the shop to address in-progress projects. The biggest was my mental block on the 4-sided quartersawn legs for the dining table. In a previous entry, I discussed how I botched the lock miter joint. It took me a while to get up the nerve to get back to work on them because if I biffed it again, they’d be too thin and I’d ...

MDB #4: The Age of the Machines - Final milling and profiling

1451 days ago by PurpLev | 14 comments »

Disclaimer: This blog follows my Magen David Board that is already finished and posted here Once everything was glued up into a single slab, it was time to plane it flat and parallel. one of the strips I jointed happen (don’t ask me how…lol) to be jointed off square, throwing the last 4-5 strips in the glueup off flat (mostly flat). I was tired at this point, and just figured I’m not going to rejoint it, but will pay the price and plane it all down at the cost of having a...

Darrell Peart's Aurora Sofa Table #4: Table Top

1780 days ago by CaptainSkully | 3 comments »

As I was waiting for another project to dry, I did a little work on the table top. I had cut it oversized on purpose to take advantage of the wavy figure in the board. I then had to face the difficult decision of how to trim it down for a sofa/foyer table that didn’t stick too far out. I settled on a 14” wide board, which leaves plenty of room for a decent overhand in the front, 2 1/4” legs, and a side apron that doesn’t look like a chubby baby’s leg. I the...

Dust Collection #2: infiltration.... filter me this, filter me that

2018 days ago by PurpLev | 28 comments »

I ordered a 0.3 micron replacement filter from Wynn Environmental to replace my Jet DC1100 30 micron bag. Originally I was going to make a simple review for people to benefit from my experience with the new filter I got… but since it had gotten a bit more complicated, I figured this is blog-worthy, and the ‘regular’ review will follow once I experience more the performance of the filter. Disclaimer: I have had nothing but great experience from Wynn Environmental, from ...

Being Freed Up. Seeing wood and woodworking in a new light.

2291 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 18 comments »

Ok, I promised myself and my wife that I would quit typing so much and work in the shop more. So, I’ve been fairly quiet, only admiring all of the growth of LJ, and the projects and blogs a few times a day quietly. This growing bunch of folks has been truly inspirational for me. But, when I type too much, I don’t make things, bills come in the mailbox, upset spouse, thus the silence. After all, what I have to say isn’t all that important anyway. Something else my wife t...
