Overview
There are a number of people who have indicated they would like to know more about what it takes to turn pens. There are quite a few very good pen turners who are members of our community. My intent is go get an overview out there to encourage more people to give it a try. I’m hoping some of the other pen turners will add to this and we can get more people turning. It really is quite simple and very rewarding.

Hey Everyone,
In this episode of the Teen Age Woodworker i will show how i made the square ebony inlay in my hickory picture frames.
!
I found this to be an inlay that i was intimidated with in the beginning but turned out to be a really simple inlay to do that anyone can do with a drill and a chisel to get a nice tight fitting inlay. it took so long to get this video out because i was planning another inlay but that project never worked out. so i hope that you enjoy it!

As you may have guessed, I make many of these tables. The practice is needed, and the combinations of woods make it very interesting.
These were all made from the plexiglass templates shown. By using these templates, I can make these tops very quickly.
I also have other shapes that are more complicated, which I’ll post at another time.

Hey Everybody,
In this episode of the Teen Age Woodworker I make a pretty cool Arts-and-Crafts style picture frame out of Oak for my cousin. Some things that i go over in this episode are half blind dovetails and making a simple triangle peg. here’s what the finished product is.

I call this the “Opposing Arches” table.
This commissioned glass top display table, or buffet, is 50” wide at the base, 14” deep and 29” tall. It supports a piece of glass that is ¾” thick by 18” by 66”.
The construction is shop sawn zebrawood veneers, laminated on two layers of 1/8” poplar bending ply, on a curved torsion box inner core. The curved members are then framed in sold quarter sawn sapelli. The divider box is shop sawn veneer, cut from a very fine grained piece of Macassar...

I have been making Ebony plugs for the nightstands. There are 96 plugs in this project (48 per nightstand) so I needed to make a production run out of it. I decided to do a little “how I did it” for those who might need this in the future.
The plugs will be set into their square holes with the edges flush to the surface. The tops are pillowed ~1/64” making them sit proud. Each plug must be polished to give it a beautiful sheen.

In this part I’m intending to finish the cigar pen I started last time. I’m going to add a bloodwood accent to the writing end of the pen.
To do this I took a bloodwood scrap and drilled the center. I then took a spare brass tube put it on the pen mill and squared one end to the hole. This allows the part to mate seamlessly to the piece on the tube.

I spent some time today setting the ebony plugs I made in my last entry. It was pretty easy really even though I was pretty apprehensive about drilling holes in an assembled piece.
Start by drilling some holes. These plugs are 1/4” so the drill bit is a little smaller at 3/16”. I drilled a little over the depth of the plugs at 1/4”

Well I haven’t been here in a while. Summer is usually slow for cribbage board business and I actually spent two months doing no woodworking at all. First break I’ve had since I started making boards about 4 years ago. I did spend some time improving my shop and putting in a dust-collection system. I’ll update the pictures of it soon.

Ebony (Diospyros ebenum)
Ebony is a really beautiful wood but is also very, very hard to work with. from my uses of Ebony i have found that it is a very brittle wood and chips very often. it is also very hard to shape using hand tools again because it chips so much. really i have found that the only way to shape it is to sand it and because it is so dark i have a hard time of finding in which direction the grain runs and all it does it chip. also when gluing up Ebony because of the oil con...
