Overview
There are a number of people who have indicated they would like to know more about what it takes to turn pens. There are quite a few very good pen turners who are members of our community. My intent is go get an overview out there to encourage more people to give it a try. I’m hoping some of the other pen turners will add to this and we can get more people turning. It really is quite simple and very rewarding.
What I like about turning pens is the ability to finish a ...

I have been making Ebony plugs for the nightstands. There are 96 plugs in this project (48 per nightstand) so I needed to make a production run out of it. I decided to do a little “how I did it” for those who might need this in the future.
The plugs will be set into their square holes with the edges flush to the surface. The tops are pillowed ~1/64” making them sit proud. Each plug must be polished to give it a beautiful sheen.
I started with 6 1/4” X 3/...

Well, I was asked to put together a blog on how I made my segmentd ring. Since I had to make a new one for myself, (first one too small) I thought I would go ahead and do a step by step picture tutorial. My first time ever doing something like this , so hope it comes out OK.
Here goes;
Wood Selection
The first step in making the ring is deciding what woods to use. As we all know, the selection is quite large. One of the most important things is color, but the most important is hardne...

I call this the “Opposing Arches” table.
This commissioned glass top display table, or buffet, is 50” wide at the base, 14” deep and 29” tall. It supports a piece of glass that is ¾” thick by 18” by 66”.
The construction is shop sawn zebrawood veneers, laminated on two layers of 1/8” poplar bending ply, on a curved torsion box inner core. The curved members are then framed in sold quarter sawn sapelli. The divider box is shop sawn veneer, cut from a very fine grained piece of Macassar...

As you may have guessed, I make many of these tables. The practice is needed, and the combinations of woods make it very interesting.
These were all made from the plexiglass templates shown. By using these templates, I can make these tops very quickly.
I also have other shapes that are more complicated, which I’ll post at another time.

I know dark colors are a bad idea in a dusty shop, but I just couldn’t resist their siren song. Time to go crash my boat on the rocks! I looked at the colors of the planer, and with the help of our office manager at my company, decided I wanted a black cabinet with a red drawer.
I labored over my choices for an hour in Home Depot, and even had them unpack stock boxes to get some Minwax ‘blank’ stain so we could mix up some reds. I chose “Spice” and “Chin...

While attending the Brisbane Timber and Working with Wood Show last weekend, I had the good fortune to meet up with quite a few friends.. I’ve mentioned him a lot in my posts so far, and luckily I was able to learn from him this past quarter as an intern professor. Richard Newman is incredibly brilliant and talented but unfortunately has given up on making furniture. Now he makes banjos, probably the most well made you can buy. He had a great run of making some of the most complicated, intricate, and precise furniture of his time. I could ramble on and on but here are pictures of some of his work.
The centerpi...

Hi Jocks!
This is a video of making a drawer pull for a project I am working on. I turned the pull from some beech and ebony. This is the kind of project that I thought that I needed a lathe for. I have been bitten by the turning bug and that is all that I seem to want to do lately… turn! This is such a small part of the overall project but it sure was a fun highlight in making it. I hope that you enjoy watching!

It is great to feel as if I really accomplished something. Although I didn’t finish everything on my laundry list of things to do yesterday, I got to most everything I wanted to done and at the end of the day I made the choice to call it an evening and just chill. I felt satisfied that I did enough for the day and wanted to sit back and enjoy the moment. I played some scrabble, watched a show or two and went to bed kind of early because I wanted to be refreshed and well-rested when I...
