Good news first: I am pleased with the color of the panels. I am not a big fan of staining, but it does have its place, this being one of them. I wanted something much more red that what was available naturally, so the Cabernet stain did the trick. Since these photos, I have applied two coats of wipe-on poly to each side. I will apply at least one more coat per side, This process is a little slow because, although I could apply a coat every eight hours, I am only in the shop once a day...

I made some finishing samples from some scraps left over from the Lyptus plywood. Left: Varathane Cabernet wood stain under Minwax Wipe-on Poly ; Middle: Minwax Wipe-on Poly Right : Waterlox.
I normally do not like to use stains, but the Lyptus ply that I am using for the cabinet is not as red as I would have liked it to be. Therefore, I (actually, she) decided on the Cabernet stain and Wipe-on Poly.

This design is a takeoff of a night table design I did last year. The influence is the architecture of Bhutan. I graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso, one of only about three places in the world that share this type of architecture.
