I just finished my drafting/desk and finally brought it into the house this evening. This was a great project to make and there were two new techniques I used on this project, so I learned a lot. As part of the design for this desk I decided that I wanted a slight taper and curve to the legs and I wanted a deep red Mahogany color.
After making a template for the legs I contemplated how to cut each leg out, the fastest way would have been to either use a flush trim bit with a router agains...

A deep red mahogany finish doesn’t have to be the result of a complicated process. I’ll show you how I use a simple two-step method to revitalize my mother in law’s old beat up rocking char. First, a coat of General Finishes Merlot Water-Based Dye. Second, a coat of General Finishes Brown Mahogany Gel Stain. Its all finished off with a nice satin lacquer topcoat.
Topics Covered:
Application tips for water-based dyes
Application tips for gel stains
The co...

This modern sofa table was built for donation to a charity fundraising auction.
This slideshow was played to generate more interest in the table by highlighting the construction process. Generating more interest generates more money for the charity.
The auction was a bit disappointing overall, but my table brought in the more money than anything else. Funds raised at the auction help support programs for people with developmental disabilities.
The winning bidder ask...

well here it is, my first attempt at a dye job.
As you can see, the dying process mostly worked, but not 100%. I’m not really sure I like the color selection anyway, but it would have been better if each piece of dyed maple had dyed completely. I wonder now if using a pressure pot is the only way to ensure that each piece gets 100% color saturation… time and testing will tell I suppose.
here’s a detail shot of the piece.
Any feedback, suggestions & insights woul...

Today I’ll be staining some maple. The customer want a cherry finish. Not a new cherry wood look, but the old antique look with years patina. More like the stuff you’d find on the a showroom floor call “cherry finish”. As most of you know, maple doesn’t absorb stain very good, so to achieve a dark, rich finish is impossible with stain only.
Several years ago, I standardize this finish for my customers and make to sample piece with the steps that need to be...

I was able to plane the stock for the shelves yesterday. I glued up a large enough blank for two shelves, then used the fence to cut them parallel. I then used the cross-cut sled to square the other sides.
I got to use my Delta new mortiser to make all of the mortises (3 on each side x 4 sides = 12 total). Luckily, they were all 3/8” and had the same offset from the front/back. This meant that with one setup, I could knock them all out. If I had done them with a chisel, ...

Sorry for the False Start Guys…
I had the privacy setting turned on when I posted to YouTube. (D’oh!)
It’s Finally Here!
Whew! It takes a lot of work to shoot a video, edit, and get it posted to the internet.
I am still struggling with posting to the internet. My HD file sizes are too big to be accepted by BlipTv and YouTube, and once I get the size down to an acceptable limit, they lose quite a bit of quality. This is a bit frustrating and makes me sad to see al...

A friend of mine has a cabinet shop with a spray booth and was nice enough to let me play in it. These photos were all taken in his shop.
Here is one of the samples we tried on a test piece. This is aniline die dissolved in alcohol.
WOW, I really like the color!
We used his Festool sander for the final sanding.
I had to stir the dye for over an hour.
On goes the die:
Sanding in between coats of sanding sealer and lacquer:

The finish was sprayed yesterday. It was a combination of a dye stain, wiping stain, and a protective coat. The dye stain was srayed on only. Since it was thinned with about 50 parts to one thinner, it dried in about 10 seconds. That gave me the very dark tone I was after. Some production lines use this process only for their color, but I feel it doesn’t give the piece enough depth. I still use a wiping stain, in this case Dark Walnut, to “pop” the grain.
The finish...
