Work(shop) in Progress #6: New Table Saw : Unpacking and Assembly of Ridgid R4511

251 days ago by PurpLev | 39 comments »

So after much research and debates, I have finally charged the card, and 2 days later the delivery arrived with the new saw in the box (I opted to have it delivered from the store as opposed to pick it up myself – at 450lbs, I simply wouldn’t be able to unload it myself) Delivery from HD was swift and smooth, positive and friendly guy stop at my place saturday morning, and helped me position the box in my garage – I couldn’t be happier (took 5 minutes, 4.5 of those was...

Dust Collection Progress..

446 days ago by CraftsmanCollective | 15 comments »

So in my first blog entry I touched on my dust collection progress. I’ve recieved a bit of interest with it so I thought I might share some of what I’ve learned to help others get a head start on thier system or to improve the system they already have. I’ve spent a ton of time researching and testing this stuff and can geniunely say that what I post here works exceptionally well. I do alot of work with MDF and we all know of the hazards of wood dust, especially MDF. Im ...

Dust Collection

755 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 33 comments »

Dust collection is a very important issue in the shop. It is critical to health and general safety. Dust collection adds to the efficiency of the shop because the dust goes straight into the collection container and does not have to be swept up after being worked in and around. It is achieved in as many various ways as woodworkers can think up. Here is how I have chosen to do it in one shop. These views are from my brother’s shop in Ohio where I am currently working. Point of Us...

Tools #5: Overhead Blade Guard

757 days ago by mot | 9 comments »

I’ve been meaning to blog this for awhile. I’ve gotten a few messages asking about my blade guard so I wanted to give the story. As many of us know, the blade guards that come with standard table saws are awkward to use and often get taken off and never replaced. My original motivation for the blade gaurd, however, was not safety. It was dust control. When I set up my shop in my basement, I got overhead dust filters and dust collectors with piping. After cutting with my t...

My New Router Table #3: Finishing Cabinet Assembly and Dust Collection

752 days ago by Blake | 12 comments »

This project is really coming together. That biscuit jointer really makes quick and easy work of cabinet assembly. I have never really gotten a chance to use it before. I ordered an Incra Magni-Lock router plate through Woodcraft. It seems to be on the slow boat. But hopefully it will come at about the time I need it. Anyway, more chronicles of the progress I made on my day off yesterday: Here is the cabinet fascia with half lap joinery, 3/4” x 2” Beechwood (the most inex...

Dust Collection #2: infiltration.... filter me this, filter me that

320 days ago by PurpLev | 14 comments »

I ordered a 0.3 micron replacement filter from Wynn Environmental to replace my Jet DC1100 30 micron bag. Originally I was going to make a simple review for people to benefit from my experience with the new filter I got… but since it had gotten a bit more complicated, I figured this is blog-worthy, and the ‘regular’ review will follow once I experience more the performance of the filter. Disclaimer: I have had nothing but great experience from Wynn Environmental, from ...

Dust Collection #1: (Finally) Upgrading from a Shop-Vac

470 days ago by PurpLev | 7 comments »

So for the longest time I’ve heard how much a Shop-vac doesnt quite cut it when it comes to larger machines, and how much quieter “real” DC machines are compared to a shop-vac, but being a weekend warrior, my budget is limited, and space was a big issue for me until recently (we just moved, and I have a full garage to work with now – will be blogged soon as well). Lately I was eyeing some Delta AP400 machines that float on craigslist once in a while for very attract...

WHAT'S UP? "While I'm out in my Shop". #7: Things to do 12/04/2006

1090 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 5 comments »

This one is also out of the order intended, but I’d like to keep these things together. I still haven’t completed the workshop reorganization project. There seems to be so many distractions that sidetrack me. I recently made a combination shield, & dust hood for my lathe. I looked at a lot of them that you can purchase, but I opted to design my own to fit my own lathe better. It slides under my lathe bed. I guess you can put this into “Getting workshop organ...

Dustless Sanding (really!): Rigging up your own vacuum system with the Porter Cable Model 333

912 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 7 comments »

The hardest dust for me to breathe is the fine stuff that comes out of the orbital sander. I have used the Porter Cable Model 333 for about 10 years now, and have done a lot of sanding with it. I am sure there are better, more expensive sanders, but I like it, at least so far. Here is a photo showing my collection. The one I bought two years ago (gray one with yellow tinted lacquer overspray on it) is now dead, but I keep ...

Dust Collector #2: The final solution - completed.

584 days ago by GaryK | 23 comments »

Well, this is the second and final part of my dust collector retro-fit. Here you can see the two boxed as I recieved them:.. Here they are unpacked and stacked. I removed the Dust Dog label. I figured that it didn’t do anything but restrict air flow. It came off easily.. Here you can see the handle that created some confusion in the first part of this blog... As the handle is rotated it makes these “paddles” brush against the pleats of the filterknocking off the ...
