Dust Collection Progress..

448 days ago by CraftsmanCollective | 15 comments »

So in my first blog entry I touched on my dust collection progress. I’ve recieved a bit of interest with it so I thought I might share some of what I’ve learned to help others get a head start on thier system or to improve the system they already have. I’ve spent a ton of time researching and testing this stuff and can geniunely say that what I post here works exceptionally well. I do alot of work with MDF and we all know of the hazards of wood dust, especially MDF. Im ...

Dust Collection

757 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 33 comments »

Dust collection is a very important issue in the shop. It is critical to health and general safety. Dust collection adds to the efficiency of the shop because the dust goes straight into the collection container and does not have to be swept up after being worked in and around. It is achieved in as many various ways as woodworkers can think up. Here is how I have chosen to do it in one shop. These views are from my brother’s shop in Ohio where I am currently working. Point of Us...

Dust Collection #2: infiltration.... filter me this, filter me that

321 days ago by PurpLev | 14 comments »

I ordered a 0.3 micron replacement filter from Wynn Environmental to replace my Jet DC1100 30 micron bag. Originally I was going to make a simple review for people to benefit from my experience with the new filter I got… but since it had gotten a bit more complicated, I figured this is blog-worthy, and the ‘regular’ review will follow once I experience more the performance of the filter. Disclaimer: I have had nothing but great experience from Wynn Environmental, from ...

Work(shop) in Progress #6: New Table Saw : Unpacking and Assembly of Ridgid R4511

253 days ago by PurpLev | 39 comments »

So after much research and debates, I have finally charged the card, and 2 days later the delivery arrived with the new saw in the box (I opted to have it delivered from the store as opposed to pick it up myself – at 450lbs, I simply wouldn’t be able to unload it myself) Delivery from HD was swift and smooth, positive and friendly guy stop at my place saturday morning, and helped me position the box in my garage – I couldn’t be happier (took 5 minutes, 4.5 of those was...

Need plan for table saw dust collection.

120 days ago by John Gray | 4 comments »

I purchased the hood shown in the link below. http://www.pennstateind.com/store/R-TDHOOD.html And I want to install it on my Ridgid TA3650 saw. Now comes the good part!!! I had a plan to build a unit that incorporates the hood. The unit is 3/4” plywood (2’x4 1/2’ approx.) that bolts between the saw and the stand, you screw the dust hood to the plywood. The plan shows a drawer and shelf using the plywood “overhang” to the left of the saw and a shelf on t...

Dust proof! #1: Contractor's Table Saw

167 days ago by Pankratio | 3 comments »

Good evening, everyone! I read, while standing in the magazine aisle at Safeway, an article in a recent Fine Woodworking issue about dust-proofing table saws. While I elected not to follow the author’s rather comprehensive dust-proofing method, I still thought that, on behalf of my lovely bride to be and the kids I’ll one day bounce upon my knee that I ought to improve the dust collection efficiency of my table saw. The table saw itself is a Craftex CT146, which is pretty mu...

My New Router Table #3: Finishing Cabinet Assembly and Dust Collection

753 days ago by Blake | 12 comments »

This project is really coming together. That biscuit jointer really makes quick and easy work of cabinet assembly. I have never really gotten a chance to use it before. I ordered an Incra Magni-Lock router plate through Woodcraft. It seems to be on the slow boat. But hopefully it will come at about the time I need it. Anyway, more chronicles of the progress I made on my day off yesterday: Here is the cabinet fascia with half lap joinery, 3/4” x 2” Beechwood (the most inex...

shop improvements #1: Air filter

293 days ago by JMB | 5 comments »

Drove out to Geneva today to pick up an air filtration unit for the new workshop. The painters have been complaining about sawdust in their art (oops). The fellow I bought it from built it himself from scratch. Despite that, it is very well designed, probably better than most manufactured units. Twin filters (intake and outtake), fan and motor completely removable for service without pulling any wires or bolts, and it is pre-wired for low and high speeds with the flip of a switch. Only ...

Inside Picture Framing #3: Dust Cover

361 days ago by kewald | 0 comments »

A picture frame typically has a dust cover on the back. As it’s name implies, this cover is designed to keep dust out of the frame package. However, it is really more important than that. Properly covering the obverse of a frame keeps out dust, insects and airborne pollutants that could cause harm to the frame contents. Kraft paper has historically been the covering material of choice, although truly not the best. In my opinion, the best covering material is Tyvek. You know, the s...

Dust Collection #1: (Finally) Upgrading from a Shop-Vac

471 days ago by PurpLev | 7 comments »

So for the longest time I’ve heard how much a Shop-vac doesnt quite cut it when it comes to larger machines, and how much quieter “real” DC machines are compared to a shop-vac, but being a weekend warrior, my budget is limited, and space was a big issue for me until recently (we just moved, and I have a full garage to work with now – will be blogged soon as well). Lately I was eyeing some Delta AP400 machines that float on craigslist once in a while for very attract...
