The Gen’l Contractor says that I can start moving in, even tho we have not had the final inspection. He had to have the plans redrawn because I moved the doors and windows. Then he has to have the plans stamped by the city before he can call for the “dry-in” and the final inspection. The target date is Wednesday but he is concerned that the holiday week will cause delays. So, I can start moving in, I just can’t place any insulation or wallboard yet. But, I can sta...

This project is really coming together. That biscuit jointer really makes quick and easy work of cabinet assembly. I have never really gotten a chance to use it before.
I ordered an Incra Magni-Lock router plate through Woodcraft. It seems to be on the slow boat. But hopefully it will come at about the time I need it.
Anyway, more chronicles of the progress I made on my day off yesterday:
Here is the cabinet fascia with half lap joinery, 3/4” x 2” Beechwood (the most inex...

Dust collection is a very important issue in the shop. It is critical to health and general safety. Dust collection adds to the efficiency of the shop because the dust goes straight into the collection container and does not have to be swept up after being worked in and around. It is achieved in as many various ways as woodworkers can think up. Here is how I have chosen to do it in one shop. These views are from my brother’s shop in Ohio where I am currently working.

I’ve been meaning to blog this for awhile. I’ve gotten a few messages asking about my blade guard so I wanted to give the story.
As many of us know, the blade guards that come with standard table saws are awkward to use and often get taken off and never replaced. My original motivation for the blade gaurd, however, was not safety. It was dust control. When I set up my shop in my basement, I got overhead dust filters and dust collectors with piping. After cutting with my t...

Wow, I’m bushed. Everything is as cleaned up as it is going to be, Someone on the cement crew liked candy bars because there are at least 6 wrappers scattered about, but my back is too sore to pick them up tonight. The lumber will be delivered tomorrow. My contractor wanted to give the cement (especially the driveway) another day to cure, so the framing won’t start until Friday. I’m supposed to figure out where to put the porta-pottie and the dumpster…......heck, h...

You would think that the trades would take Sunday off especially since it continues to rain intermittantly, but the electrician just left after installing the outlets that will be in the middle of the slab. The form (cement people) fellows were here yesterday afternoon placing rebar in the foundation and doing a little more compacting. I think they are going to try to pour cement tomorrow, however, the plastic barrier has not been placed and a part of the form where they drove their mini-tr...

Well I got myself out in the shop lined up the fence for the miter saw and leveled it to the bench. I also drilled and ran the vacuum hoses to the saw, at first I wasn’t sure what to use to connect the hose to the saw but 1 1/2 PVC pipe works fine with a couple of wraps of duct tape to snug it up
I placed a small vacuum that I use to use to clean out cabinets after I installed them under my bench, it is small enough that it really don’t take to much room and is a powerful l...

The hardest dust for me to breathe is the fine stuff that comes out of the orbital sander. I have used the Porter Cable Model 333 for about 10 years now, and have done a lot of sanding with it. I am sure there are better, more expensive sanders, but I like it, at least so far.
Here is a photo showing my collection.
The one I bought two years ago (gray one with yellow tinted lacquer overspray on it) is now dead, but I keep ...

Bill asked me to do a blog on how I like my Triton respirator. Not sure I have a lot to say, but here goes.
Why did I get it? - because the LumberJocks told me how dangerous woodworking can be, due to breathing in the dust. - because when we got some rough-hewn pine I found that my eyes and lungs were irritated soon after some cutting of it had taken place
How it worksThe hardhat is adjustable to fit. There is a flipdown face shield, and ear protection that can also be flipped up/down.A&...

I finally did some wood-turning yesterday, & my dust shield worked great. It can be slid to follow along with the area your working when doing a longer turning. I was concerned that the plastic window on it would get dirty because of static, but it stayed clear of dust. It also didn’t interfere with my work.My sweetheart was setting up her display of Dickens carolers yesterday, & mentioned she should have a light post. I surprised her, & made one for her. I’ll show it...
