I’m posting these pictures as a means to get bloggin’…and, because I’m interested in milling and drying lumber (on a scale that I can accommodate – in the backyard). I’m also brand new at it, so it’s just fun to share! I would have liked to have photos or video of this ‘small time’ sawing in the backyard, but wasn’t quite there yet!

While looking through old Flickr sets, I realized I never made public one in which I slabbed one of the huge Eucalyptus logs I wrestled home from a craigslist ad. The largest of them is over 230lbs. I chose the smallest – probably around 80-100lbs, because I was desperate to see what lurked inside. As a home hobbyist in a big city, not working as much in BF as in “oh look, a log!” I decided to keep things simple on myself and go with KD DF for stickering my slabs. I have a bunch of really old, really dry stuff, and in fact tried to build some finger-jointed frames for another project I’d like to post about someday, but dropping one only a foot to the ground caused all 4 corners to shatter. In some ways I would be proud to have “Bodger” on my CV. The gentlemen who made chair spindles in the beech woods in and around Buckinghamshire when Charles Dickens was writing were called Bodgers. It’s hard to see where the connection with “botching a job” comes from but there probably isn’t one, apart from the fact that they come from the same, older, root. Bodgers were not “botchers” or “butchers” or “cowboys” even, they were skilled woodsmen who cleaved beech wood and then turned the...

Thought it might be fun to share photos of my tiles drying.
Then again it might be boring.

Tiles are sitting on the fiber ceiling tiles you buy from Lowes. Bought the damaged ones real real cheap.
Ceiling tiles are the best for this. Draws the wetness out of the clay and speeds the drying cycle time.
Also have an industrial size box fan blowing 24-7 on them. They’re getting dry extra-quick.
Will start a kiln load sooner then estimated.

Well, just some text at this point – but I can’t slow my heart rate down at the thought of what’s happening next door. A major maple – which looks like it may have some serious figure – is coming down. I’ve been offered the bole (the main trunk from the base to the crotch), which is about 10-12 feet long, and a couple sections of major limbs from the crotch up a ways. The arborist says he’ll need to cut the bole in two…I’d like it left ...
