I have used Google SketchUp (free version) for the last few years and have found it to be excellent for designing projects like this. All my crates are designed and costed based on these types of drawings. For this project I tried something new in the design…I added the bolts I will use to put it all together. The picture of the bolts was done by hiding the rest of the crate…it took about 5 seconds to hide the other components. The finished crate will be 11 feet high, 11 feet dee...
On April 24, 1990 the Hubble Space telescope was launched into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery. The images they sent back were blurry. It was one of the darkest days in the space programs history. After polishing the primary mirror for a year they had screwed it up, worse than Billy Buckner in the sixth game of the 86’ World Series. The mirror was off by 1/50th the width of a single human hair. The holes, which I drilled in the legs for my router table, were off by more th...
Yesterday, while working on the stake sides for my Harbor Freight trailer, I found myself in a need for a depth gauge for the drill bits I was using. I didn’t think to bring out a roll of painter’s tape and I was too into my work to get one from the dungeon. A solution that worked well for me: use your marking pencil to draw a heavy line across one of the twist bit’s flukes. The line will be quite visible as the bit spins. _ I have been busy with building a trailer...
I kind of had a change in plans yesterday. It was one of those ‘flexibility’ things that I was talking about that happens. But it was a good thing and one of the best parts of being your own boss and being on deadline with the things that you need for everything else means that you can switch things up rather quickly without too much of an issue. Early in the day I received an order for several of the painting kits that we offer. We usually keep a couple of each of the kits ...
Well it’s another Monday and we all are back at work. But he’s a video that’s sure to help you as well as give you a smile. Hope you enjoy.
The response to yesterday’s blog, “I Suck”, was tremendous. The number of views went way up. I can only assume that there were a great number of people who agree whole heartedly, and likely have had this opinion for some time. When they saw the title, they were eager to revel in my realization, of that which they had always known. The comments were wonderful. I responded to a number of them and I looked up a lot of the products that people suggested. I am much smarter today. Thanks...
I remember Sen. Bob Dole telling the story of a day spent with his father loading hay bales into the barn’s loft. When he reached down to pick up the last one his dad stopped and asked, “do you know which one that is?” He went on to answer, “that’s the one we’ve been looking for all day.” Well sure enough I’ve finally gotten to the part I’ve been looking for. This is where all the templates, jigs, drilling, and such come together. N...
We have been remodeling our kitchen in the past few weeks, everything but the cabinets has been renewed/replaced. The oak-faced cabinets, made by Kraft Maid in the 90s or so, look good from a distance, but when you look closer, the craftsmanship is really bad in many places. I already had to re-glue a door, ease sharp edges etc. Another thing that bothered me was, that the wrong screws were used in many places. Pan-head screws stuck out and scratched adjacent surfaces etc. The drawer fr...
