Jigs and Fixtures #1: 8" Drill Press Platform Fixture

605 days ago by Jeff | 18 comments »

I made this fixture as part of the puttering around I did in the shop this weekend. It wish I had already had it built the other day when I made my shelf pin jig since it would have sped up that process considerably. Building the fixture was the thing that did go smoothly this weekend. My work on the closet shelf/cabinet could have gone more smoothly (I messed up pretty badly with the flush trim bit since I didn’t really have enough surface to support the router’s base). Alas, I d...

Shop Tools #1: Would you have passed it up?

599 days ago by WayneC | 16 comments »

My son wanted to get up this morning and go to some garage sales. I’ve been gone all week working and thought it would be a good idea to spend some time with him and his sister today. We happened across this drill press at a garage sale and I tried, but failed to pass it up. I have a fairly new Rigid Drill press with a Rockler drill press table and it works great for me. I thought long and hard about buying or not buying it. My biggest issue is space. This one has some addition...

Weekend upgrade

605 days ago by scottb | 10 comments »

Did a bit of unplanned shopping today. Had to pick up a book for some hints on redoing a set of stairs this week. New oak treads, risers, double rails with 24 spindles on each side and open (that’s right open) beneath! No kneewall, or partial boxing in to allow myself to run the spindles down to a diagonal piece… just drywall to box in the existing supports…. but I digress. So while I was searching for that book…. I’ve been hankering for a new drill, rather an...

Ouch: Or why a drill with more torque isn't necessarily good

276 days ago by Dan Lyke | 9 comments »

Built a utility table for the back shed today, used a 6’ length of bowling alley, 6×4 doug fir legs. I was originally going to do mortise and tenon joints in the doug fir legs, but had a few issues. The lesson which hurt most: My Festool C12 cordless drill in low range gearing has a lot of torque. Way more than my DeWalt wall powered drill. Enough to really hurt my wrist when the 1¼” Irwin Speedbore drill bit binds and rips the drill out of my hands. Made a quick...

Fishtail Joint #1: Fishtail Joint Setup, part 1

114 days ago by danriffle | 6 comments »

By popular demand, here’s the details on how to cut the fishtail joint. For this example, I decided to make a small sliding top box. This is a somewhat complex joint to cut. There are a lot of steps to explaining it, though it goes a lot faster once you’ve done it. (There are a lot of pictures in this explanation as they will probably explain the process better than I will.) The place to begin explaining the joint is with the tools used to make it. The essential tools ar...

Honey Do List #3: Toybox in Progress - Finger out of commission

268 days ago by cpt_hammer | 3 comments »

Well, I’ve been working on my daughter’s toybox for the past couple of weeks. I have the base and the bookshelf top assembled and now I’m adding trim pieces to hide the plywood edges and assembling the toybox lids. However, this weekend, when I was attaching my Kreg pocket screw drill bit to the drill, I got my pinky between the bit and the sleeve (why was it still in the sleeve? Don’t ask). It took 4 1/2 hours in the ER at the local hospital to get 4 stitches, te...

Kitchen Cabinets #5: 352 holes

44 days ago by Dan Lyke | 2 comments »

I was telling people that it was over 400 holes, but though the drawers are about 27×22, the actual grid for the pot separators in the bottoms of these drawers is only 16×22. Still, the enormity of just how many holes I’d set myself up to drill only sunk in after the first hundred. I’d clamped two of these together with a sheet of pegboard on top for stability, and used 1½” of maple block drilled out on the drill press to keep my bit vertical. I put it on a sh...

Juniper Table Lamp w/ "double base" #3: Drilling holes for the cord

273 days ago by Candy Hicks | 2 comments »

Okay I had the lamp almost completely sanded before I was able to get the holes drilled. I myself have only drilled a few lamps so my husband helps out with this. It is not as easy as it seems, you have to make sure that you are aiming just right so you come out in the right spot so you end up through the bottom of the lamp. This first shot is of course the first hole that is being drilled, in the second shot you can see where the drill bit is coming out. Now starting at the exit hole w...

The Craftsman's Path #10: Super-simple drill press table upgrade

458 days ago by Mark Mazzo | 1 comment »

Sometimes after you complete a task, you wonder why you procrastinated so long to do it. I had a good day in the shop yesterday doing a simple but, long-overdue upgrade to my drill press. If you are considering a similar upgrade, or you are just looking for some inspiration to tackle a project that you’ve been putting off, you might want to take a look at the post about it on my blog. Thanks for reading and let me know what you think!

Handplane Restoration #5: Plane Blades

655 days ago by WayneC | 1 comment »

This morning I got up, threw my tool hunting pack and my son in the car and headed out to see what would come our way. We made our way across town to the local Woodcraft store, stopping at a few yard sales along the way. We did not find much of interest other than a trashed yankee drill that happend to have all of its original drill bits in its storage area. A buck later and we were on our way. At Woodcraft, I purchased a Hock blade and chip breaker for use the Record T5 hand plane descr...
