645 days ago by Brit | 59 comments »

In a recent tool gloat, dakremer showed off three lovely braces he’d purchased and said “Now I just have to learn how to restore this kind of thing”. WayneC was first to congratulate him and then proceeded to drop me in it (only joking) by saying “Brit has lots of experience in restoring braces”. Later in the comments dakremer said he would love to restore at least one of them to like new condition. Always a sucker for punishment, I agreed to do a blog on restoring a hand brace and I’ve...

How to find and harvest legal burls!

1316 days ago by OregonBurls | 37 comments »

Hey everyone, It was suggested that I start a discussion on how to find and harvest burls. Please give your input also. I don’t deal with straight grain that often. I cut and sell burls for a living so here is what I know. It is illegal to harvest a burl without permission. of course if it is on your own property you can give yourself permission. What I do is put an ad on Craig’s list saying I want your burls. Most people don’t know what burls are. So you don’t get that many calls....

Hello to all and all are Welcome, Intro: Hi, my name is Kory Kiker and a couple of weeks ago Ms. Debbie contacted me about conducting an online class for those interested in learning the art of intarsia. I was very excited about the chance to share a few things I have learned in the last three years of doing intarsia art. Before intarsia I did a lot of wood carving so I hope this helps give each project more depth and definition. I will tell you now that most of the things I’ve lear...

Tip of the day! Use a push stick!

125 days ago by OregonBurls | 30 comments »

THE ART OF NOT TAKING A TRIP TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM!Yesterday I awoke out of my daze of admiring a quilted maple block with a shocking sensation and blood everywhere. The dull blade on my bandsaw did not help and using my hands to push the beautiful block through didn’t help either. Simple word of advise which many of you can attest too. Keep your tools sharp and use a push stick! Lets say it all together now! Keep your tools sharp and use a push stick!Keep your tools sharp and ...

Drill Clutch, Use them or lose Them?????? #1: Drill Clutch, Use Them or Lose Them?????

1256 days ago by Tony Z | 25 comments »

Here’s a quick poll for everyone. Almost all cordless drills now come equipped with a clutch with up to 20+ settings. Does anyone out there use them???? I keep mine set on the most powerfull setting, or on my drills, the setting with the picture of the drill bit. If I need some finesse, in driving a screw for example, I just take my time and feather the trigger. What are your thoughts? I will post the results after I get enough responses. Please answer with the following answers: A. ...

CARPENTER ANT DAMAGE TO OUR GAZEBO SHED ROOF #1: Discovery of the Damage, Demolishing old roof, & Rebuilding

1361 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 24 comments »

I opened the shed door the other day, & discovered water on the floor. I had just made a new shed door about a year ago. I thought the wind had blown water in from under the door. Then I noticed sawdust on the floor with drip marks coming from above. I looked up, & saw some funny looking white stuff coating the ceiling up in the corner above the door. The top plate of the wall studs also had piles of sawdust on it, & ants galore! Right away I knew I had some work c...
