This past weekend I did a pretty massive and ridiculously stressful glue up. It wasn’t as bad as I’m making it sound but with how long I’ve been working on this chest of drawers, I just wanted it to come out square and solid. I’m pleased to announce that I was successful. Because of the magnitude of this glue-up, I didn’t bother taking any pictures. The biggest part was gluing the outer frame with the panels in place, and then while all of that was safely clamped...
It’s been some time since my last blog post on this tool chest, but I’ve been making changes and using the tool chest for the past month, really putting it to the test. I debated with myself for some time about what to do with the lower section of the tool chest. I liked the idea of having an open space (what I originally intended) because it’s easy to grab tools as long as they are in my line of sight. However, it was not ideal because there was a lot of space wasted and...
This is a very simple to build router table made from half a sheet of 3/4” plywood and a 1/4 sheet of 1/2” plywood.
Watch this video to take a quick tour of the furniture I’ve made for our guest bedroom. There are only two major pieces in this bedroom; a dresser and a bed. This is a Norm Abrams design dresser. The primary wood is cherry and the secondary wood is poplar. The drawers are dovetailed and also have solid wood drawer guides attached to the bottom. I made this before I owned a lathe, so the knobs are an ugly mushroom style that I purchased. Notice the through dovetails on the ba...
Watch this video to take a short tour of the furniture I’ve made in my living room and dining room. These rooms are the first thing you see when you walk into our house. Unfortunately, the living room had very little furniture that I’d made. My wife and I came up with a furniture plan to resolve that and I’m well on my way to filling the living room with hand-crafted furniture. The rocking chairs are quite comfortable and I love the sweeping lines. The foot stools...
Making and fitting drawers. See it finished.
I have been commissioned to build a seven day pipe stand with a case of drawers by one of America’s foremost artisanal tobacco pipe makers. This is an intricate piece requiring many, many hours of planning joinery, considering wood movement to determine what wants to be solid and what wants to be veneered (using shop-made veneer nearly 1/8” thick), number of drawers and arrangement, secret compartment planning, and combinations of precious, extoic woods and local secondary specie...
Frame is made from 2X4 construction grade pine. All shiplapped, glued, and screwed together. The wheels are locking wheels from Harbor Freight. (if you look close you can see the mistake I made in the upper left hand corner…I decided to just leave it) 1/2” BCX plywood for top and pegboard for the sides…. Next up is the drawers. I plan on making two pull-out drawers in the front. I’ve completed one of them so far (minus the drawer front). The b...
OK….. I pulled the trigger on the Porter Cable #4216 dovetail jig. I need it for the kitchen in the new house and I am up against a huge deadline. The few extra dollars I paid for this unit is for the templates included. Mini dovetails and box joints and a through dovetail and box joint jig. Now, LJs, I have a Leigh D4R so I guess the question is, “Why in the world did you ‘downgrade’? Well, I have about 130 or so drawers to build. I am hoping this jig will speed up...
