After admiring the double and double-double dovetail joints that are capable with the Incra and other jigs, I started thinking, “Why not try this by hand?” So this box is my first experiment with handcut double dovetails. It took me some time to figure out the joinery process, but once I realized a few things about this type of joint, it seemed do-able. It was quite challenging but also a ton of fun. It also does take some degree of patience and precision…which I’m still working on.

The Porter-Cable Omnijig dovetail jigs are finally available! Woodcraft in West Springfield, VA had the Porter-Cable rep in Saturday for demonstrations all day long. He said he got the jigs on Monday and only started playing with them then. So there’s a really fast learning curve.
My first question to the rep was do you have them in stock? Yes. Not wanting to look too eager I asked him to demonstrate a few things and asked him some questions. I didn’t get the sense that he really knew why ...

Well, here it goes…the long story. On my last tour to Iraq I was stationed at Balad AB, the largest FOB (Forward Operating Base) in the AOR (Area of Responsibility). I was in charge of a 110 person security team known as the FPs (Force Protection). To make a long military story short (since this is a woodworking site, not a military site), my team was responsible for the security of the entire base both inside and outside the wire, and a lot of stuff happened that made us a very tigh...

Some time ago I posted a blog about a dovetail joint I came up with. I call it the radial dovetail. It incorporates handcut dovetails, but rather than using the traditional 1:8 ratio for the dovetail angle for hardwood, each side of each tail varies and is drawn from a perspective point. Then the sides of the box were contoured to blend with the dovetail design.
Here’s a picture of the nearly completed box. It is made of curly maple, Carribean rosewood, and hickory.I like to think of t...

Just in time for Memorial day…
I made a display case for my father-in-law that holds an American flag and certificate. The flag and certificate were presented to him by an active Navy Seal serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. The certificate shows the date the flag was flown over Camp Patton in Fallujah.
This was quite an honor for my father-in-law, and the flag and certificate deserved a special case to preserve and protect them.
Here’s a link to the video on how the ca...

I bought the Rockler dovetail jig after seeing this video: http://www.rockler.com/video/video.cfm?ID=3. In the video it looks fairly staight forward and, well…easy. The guy said after only an hour he was spitting out beautiful dovetailed drawers. Well, I haven’t found it to be so simple. My jig is an older version than that shown in the video. This is the jig with the through dovetail template on it:
I also have the half blind template and have found it somewhat easie...

I just finished a video that details the construction of a neat little box I made for my wife as an anniversary gift.
This box has some unique features that make it special. Check out the video and leave a comment on the site and let me know what you think of the project.
The video can be accessed here:http://www.eaglelakewoodworking.com/post/Keepsake-Box-Cocobolo.aspx
I actually made two of this style box (one as prototype). Here’s a link to the photo galleries of each box:...

In this first installment of his Simple Joinery Mini Series, Tommy demonstrates how he executes the dovetail. More specifically, he highlights how to avoid the pitfalls encountered when hand cutting half-blind dovetails and through dovetails. Tommy also shows how a simple paring block can really raise the bar when you are cutting dovetails at your bench.
Stay tuned, in the next video Tommy explains how he keeps his chisels sharp . . . or as we say in Boston “ wicked shaaaaahp” . . . a q...

Many of you probably cut dovetails with power tools & jigs —and so do I. But for some projects, I really prefer cutting them by hand and I never tire of learning how to do it better. That’s what took me on one of my recent video “treks” (journeys), where I filmed the segment I’ve posted here — this time to the shop of master cabinetmaker Craig Vandall Stevens.
In this two-part series, Craig (who studied under James Krenov) uses only a saw, chisel, and several sh...

Houndstooth dovetails use varying sizes of tails (or varying sizes of pins…depending on your perspective). I’ve wanted to try them for quite a while now. This blog shows most of the process I’m currently going through. To get the effect it seems to me you need more tails/pins per corner than one would normally think about. In this case like a few of my other recent boxes posted, I’m using Caribbean rosewood and curly maple.
Most often, (when you see them at all) these are done by alte...
