Rockler dovetail jig trials and tribulations #1: Trials and tribulations with dovetails and box joints.

875 days ago by oscorner | 12 comments »

I bought the Rockler dovetail jig after seeing this video: http://www.rockler.com/video/video.cfm?ID=3. In the video it looks fairly staight forward and, well…easy. The guy said after only an hour he was spitting out beautiful dovetailed drawers. Well, I haven’t found it to be so simple. My jig is an older version than that shown in the video. This is the jig with the through dovetail template on it: I also have the half blind template and have found it somewhat easie...

Craftsman - Stickley Projects #8: Drawer Dovetails

875 days ago by Paul | 7 comments »

It’s the 4th and isn’t freedom a blessing! Went to the community parade this morning and free to make wood dust this afternoon! Well, after doing some thicknessing and sizing the other day, I got out the PC dovetail jig and router today. Red Oak drawer fronts and poplar secondary. Click the images for a larger view. After messing with some practice pieces for about 20 miuntes, I started cutting the real thing. Here’s a view of the last of 24 drawer sides still in t...

Hand Tools #1: Watching Paint Dry

879 days ago by woodspar | 9 comments »

While I was watching the top coat paint dry on my shutters, (the acrylic based topcoat dries a good deal faster than the oil based primer!) I got this crazy idea in my head to start working with hand tools. So I got out my planes and chisels and my pull saw and started hacking away at some pine I had laying around the shop. At one point, (it must have been the caffiene in the coffee ice cream,) I dug up my copy of “Joinery Basics” by Sam Allen, and read his in...

"Working Hands Make Good Progress" --by RusticWoodArt

888 days ago by frank | 6 comments »

Working Hands Make Good Progress ….and so here i go again, sliding across the grains of wood, kicking up some sawdust as i plough a plane, looking to be fitted in tight for all good…. And so it was that Tuesday evening I managed to get this one finished up and started tweaking the saw to achieve it’s height of perfection, in the midst of cutting for ‘wood joinery’. One could call this one a ‘dovetail saw’....’sliding dovetail saw’....’push...

Zhuhai and Meixi village #1: In search of the perfect handcut dovetail

895 days ago by chscholz | 9 comments »

So what is it, the ultimate handcut joint? The ultimate joint will require precision, flawless execution and many years of training. Many of us Western woodworkers would probably say the dovetail. Two weeks ago I had the chance to see one of the best executed examples of handcut dovetails I have ever encountered. It was in a side-area of the flower room of the Meixi village museum. Meixi was a small village in the Pearl river delta, today it is a suburb of Zhuhai, essentially the Northern ...

Auxillary Workbench #5: Apron - The inlaid (shadow) dovetail

903 days ago by mot | 12 comments »

I have been hemming and hawing on what I was going to do to give this little bench a bit more character. It’s going to serve a dual role in being both my auxillary bench for hand tool work as well as my 2 year old son’s bench. In that vane, I decided to add a little detail to the apron…the shadow or inlaid dovetail. Please note: Though I prefer to do these one-off projects with handcut dovetails, the Akeda 16 Jig was used throughout. To start, I joined one maple board...

Morgan's Jewelry Box #2: Half-Blind joints Pics (The Good and the Bad!)

917 days ago by USCJeff | 5 comments »

Here are the Half-Blind joints I was commenting on in my prior entry. Here is the first one I did. I did it without tweaking the jig. As you can see, there was a consistent gap. The tails didn’t quite fit in snuggly. I made a slight tweak of the depth, and got a much better result: As you can see, I am creating a pine prototype as I go. I still make a lot of errors as a newbie and don't want to ruin the Walnut if I can help it.

Cabinet Progress #8: The fir was flying.

942 days ago by gizmodyne | 24 comments »

Building BoxesWe started to get stressed about completing both cabinets in the next two weeks in time for the first annual wood competition at our school. So we made the decision to complete one cabinet. Today we started to build the drawers. Our drawers will be dovetailed in the front and dadoed in the back. They will receive another nicer drawer front. Step One. Cutting out the knots. Step Two. Resawing. We were able to get two 1/2” thick pieces out of each board. Step Thre...
