Today when I finally got ready to start chopping my dovetails, I felt cramped way over on the left side of the bench where my handyman vise is precariously mounted in 1/8” plywood. So I dismantled the sweet sharpening station setup I just blogged about and jimmied this little rig. It was solid, and apart from the worry that my saw would graze the clamp (it didn’t really come that close), it will do nicely until my bench is made. Once my bench is made, I’ll hopefully have...

I mentioned recently that I felt like actually making something before working on my bench. What better project for my beginner skills than a simple dovetail box? I haven’t waded through the loads of plans online for boxes, so this plan of mine might not work. Let me know what you think.
First, I had an idea that maybe I could build the entire box out of a single block of 2×4 that is 5 1/2” long. Here’s my block – it’s kempas by the way (click for big siz...

I posted some dusty pics under my projects. And these pics aren’t great additions, but they’re too heavy for me to move around by myself (and risk banging up) for better pics. I did get a lttle of the dust off the chest at least/

Well after many frustrations (or as I tell my airmen, “learning situations”), I finally finished my Trinket/Shadow box. Now, I look at all the boxes on this site and I realize that I have got a loooong way to go before I catch up to many of you box-builders. But, for my first box, I am happy with it.
Now I have learned a tremendous amount from making this box, and if I were to do it again tomorrow, it would be a lot different. There are many obvious flaws that I see and that...

Well, here it goes…the long story. On my last tour to Iraq I was stationed at Balad AB, the largest FOB (Forward Operating Base) in the AOR (Area of Responsibility). I was in charge of a 110 person security team known as the FPs (Force Protection). To make a long military story short (since this is a woodworking site, not a military site), my team was responsible for the security of the entire base both inside and outside the wire, and a lot of stuff happened that made us a very tigh...

I just finished a video that details the construction of a neat little box I made for my wife as an anniversary gift.
This box has some unique features that make it special. Check out the video and leave a comment on the site and let me know what you think of the project.
The video can be accessed here:http://www.eaglelakewoodworking.com/post/Keepsake-Box-Cocobolo.aspx
I actually made two of this style box (one as prototype). Here’s a link to the photo galleries of each box:...

I’ve been fiddling in the shop lately. Mostly with multimedia. I’ll be blogging my setup for my shop cam and computer work station, but last night I decided to make a small box. I’ve been amazed at the work that our resident small box experts make. Of course, Don, but including (but not limited to) Terdy , Andy , BigMP , YorkshireStewart , Paul , TonyWard , Dorje and everyone else who has tagged their projects with Box .
I’ve been wanting to do some concealed w...

I recently got “Hand-Cut Dovetails” with Rob Cosman and started practicing. This is the first attempt which is now a baby toy (no lead).Lessons learned. The stock is 1/4” thick. I think thicker material (3/4”) would be easier.

I thought I would pop in to let you know I’m still slowly plugging away. I’ve only had eight hours in the shop this month (July). Today (first free Saturday), I may be able to nearly double that total for the month.
It’s killing me that I can’t participate in the summer challenge but July was a bad month for me and I agreed to build these chests about a year ago! So, it was about time I put them at the top of my list.
Send an extra positive prayer/thought my w...

Not much time this week – this will probably be my only blog entry – maaaaybe one other evening this week I will have a bit of time back in the shop? Unfortunately, I don’t think I’m going to get anything ready for the summer challenge :(
Sized all the drawer sides to length
Practiced on scraps with the PC jig (4212) on through dovetails for the drawer sides to back joinery. It’s a little more complicated on through dovetails (more steps, flipping templat...
