I just finished a video that details the construction of a neat little box I made for my wife as an anniversary gift.
This box has some unique features that make it special. Check out the video and leave a comment on the site and let me know what you think of the project.
The video can be accessed here:http://www.eaglelakewoodworking.com/post/Keepsake-Box-Cocobolo.aspx
I actually made two of this style box (one as prototype). Here’s a link to the photo galleries of each box:...

I’ve been fiddling in the shop lately. Mostly with multimedia. I’ll be blogging my setup for my shop cam and computer work station, but last night I decided to make a small box. I’ve been amazed at the work that our resident small box experts make. Of course, Don, but including (but not limited to) Terdy , Andy , BigMP , YorkshireStewart , Paul , TonyWard , Dorje and everyone else who has tagged their projects with Box .
I’ve been wanting to do some concealed w...

I recently got “Hand-Cut Dovetails” with Rob Cosman and started practicing. This is the first attempt which is now a baby toy (no lead).Lessons learned. The stock is 1/4” thick. I think thicker material (3/4”) would be easier.

I thought I would pop in to let you know I’m still slowly plugging away. I’ve only had eight hours in the shop this month (July). Today (first free Saturday), I may be able to nearly double that total for the month.
It’s killing me that I can’t participate in the summer challenge but July was a bad month for me and I agreed to build these chests about a year ago! So, it was about time I put them at the top of my list.
Send an extra positive prayer/thought my w...

Not much time this week – this will probably be my only blog entry – maaaaybe one other evening this week I will have a bit of time back in the shop? Unfortunately, I don’t think I’m going to get anything ready for the summer challenge :(
Sized all the drawer sides to length
Practiced on scraps with the PC jig (4212) on through dovetails for the drawer sides to back joinery. It’s a little more complicated on through dovetails (more steps, flipping templat...

I bought the Rockler dovetail jig after seeing this video: http://www.rockler.com/video/video.cfm?ID=3. In the video it looks fairly staight forward and, well…easy. The guy said after only an hour he was spitting out beautiful dovetailed drawers. Well, I haven’t found it to be so simple. My jig is an older version than that shown in the video. This is the jig with the through dovetail template on it:
I also have the half blind template and have found it somewhat easie...

It’s the 4th and isn’t freedom a blessing! Went to the community parade this morning and free to make wood dust this afternoon!
Well, after doing some thicknessing and sizing the other day, I got out the PC dovetail jig and router today. Red Oak drawer fronts and poplar secondary. Click the images for a larger view.
After messing with some practice pieces for about 20 miuntes, I started cutting the real thing. Here’s a view of the last of 24 drawer sides still in t...

While I was watching the top coat paint dry on my shutters,
(the acrylic based topcoat dries a good deal faster than the oil based primer!)
I got this crazy idea in my head to start working with hand tools. So I got out my planes and chisels and my pull saw and started hacking away at some pine I had laying around the shop.
At one point, (it must have been the caffiene in the coffee ice cream,) I dug up my copy of “Joinery Basics” by Sam Allen, and read his in...

Working Hands Make Good Progress
….and so here i go again, sliding across the grains of wood, kicking up some sawdust as i plough a plane, looking to be fitted in tight for all good….
And so it was that Tuesday evening I managed to get this one finished up and started tweaking the saw to achieve it’s height of perfection, in the midst of cutting for ‘wood joinery’.
One could call this one a ‘dovetail saw’....’sliding dovetail saw’....’push...

So what is it, the ultimate handcut joint? The ultimate joint will require precision, flawless execution and many years of training. Many of us Western woodworkers would probably say the dovetail.
Two weeks ago I had the chance to see one of the best executed examples of handcut dovetails I have ever encountered. It was in a side-area of the flower room of the Meixi village museum. Meixi was a small village in the Pearl river delta, today it is a suburb of Zhuhai, essentially the Northern ...
