Finally after getting the table saw and tuning it, I’m able to get back on track with woodworking projects…
I still dont have my router table, so using the incra fence wouldn’t be possible to get the dovetails done. I read “The Bandsaw Book”, and it had a really nice Jig for making dovetails on the bandsaw with handcut look and fit, but with the automation of a machine and jig. I really liked the idea, and figured I’d use that technique.
unfortunatel...

It was a pretty good day, despite the gray weather outside. I arrived at the show today with a short list of things to accomplish.
Highest on my priority list was to get my battery issue for my Makita 18v Li solved. 3 of the 4 batteries have for it have gone bad, in less than 20 charges. I dropped by the booth yesterday and spoke with the district manager and he asked that I bring them in so they could test and replace them if needed. Got this done right away. Nice guys and eager to get th...

In this first installment of his Simple Joinery Mini Series, Tommy demonstrates how he executes the dovetail. More specifically, he highlights how to avoid the pitfalls encountered when hand cutting half-blind dovetails and through dovetails. Tommy also shows how a simple paring block can really raise the bar when you are cutting dovetails at your bench.
Stay tuned, in the next video Tommy explains how he keeps his chisels sharp . . . or as we say in Boston “ wicked shaaaaahp” . . . a q...

I’d first like to thank T chisel for his very informative video on making half blind dovetails. I watched it this morning and went right out to the shop ready to try out his method. It works very well! I succesfully made two sides in about one hour. It’s no speed record, but the joint is pretty tight. I’m hooked now, and will NOT be spending the cash for a Leigh jig anytime soon, now that I know I can handle making my own variable spaced dovetails.
I made a little 1:6 sho...

My mom is doing some amazing bead work. one time when I went with her to the beads store, I saw a small box/cabinet that the store used to store (no pun intended) the beads in, and thought it would make for a great way for my my to have all her beads organized – and I can make it.
After completing my handtool box (at least the general construction of if) it made me think that I can scale it down and use the same ‘general design idea’ for the beads box. plus some additions...

Houndstooth dovetails use varying sizes of tails (or varying sizes of pins…depending on your perspective). I’ve wanted to try them for quite a while now. This blog shows most of the process I’m currently going through. To get the effect it seems to me you need more tails/pins per corner than one would normally think about. In this case like a few of my other recent boxes posted, I’m using Caribbean rosewood and curly maple.
Most often, (when you see them at all) these are done by alte...

Some time ago I posted a blog about a dovetail joint I came up with. I call it the radial dovetail. It incorporates handcut dovetails, but rather than using the traditional 1:8 ratio for the dovetail angle for hardwood, each side of each tail varies and is drawn from a perspective point. Then the sides of the box were contoured to blend with the dovetail design.
Here’s a picture of the nearly completed box. It is made of curly maple, Carribean rosewood, and hickory.I like to think of t...

Many of you probably cut dovetails with power tools & jigs —and so do I. But for some projects, I really prefer cutting them by hand and I never tire of learning how to do it better. That’s what took me on one of my recent video “treks” (journeys), where I filmed the segment I’ve posted here — this time to the shop of master cabinetmaker Craig Vandall Stevens.
In this two-part series, Craig (who studied under James Krenov) uses only a saw, chisel, and several sh...

By popular demand, here’s the details on how to cut the fishtail joint. For this example, I decided to make a small sliding top box.
This is a somewhat complex joint to cut. There are a lot of steps to explaining it, though it goes a lot faster once you’ve done it. (There are a lot of pictures in this explanation as they will probably explain the process better than I will.)
The place to begin explaining the joint is with the tools used to make it. The essential tools ar...

OK, so I “cheated.”
I typically assemble face frames with pocket screws. It’s simple, fast and strong enough. Since this face frame is composed of 1” x 3/4” members, pocket screws seemed a bit weak to me—I’d only be able to use a single screw in each member, which would allow it to “spin” somewhat. While this would be minimized greatly after gluing to the carcass, some “twist” could still occur over time. Since the drawers w...
