Tool Tweaks #2: Learning to Sharpen Saws

671 days ago by Dorje | 17 comments »

I’ve been wanting to add a few saws to the “toolbox.” And, rather than spend a bunch of dough, I thought that I’d try to refurbish some used backsaws. Though I will more than likely purchase a couple older Disston or other manufacturer tenon saws, in the 12” range, I though I’d try my hand at learning to sharpen on a couple 10” backsaws with turned handles that I already have. The only functional western style backsaw I own (aside from a flush cu...

The Quest for Precision

369 days ago by Jojo | 5 comments »

Monday morning came and found me pondering about the important things in life. Well, sort of… As most of you would know by now, Lee Valley’s Veritas brand has come with a couple of new block planes, the first of their new ”Premium” Series. Aesthetic considerations apart—I am not very fond of the way they look, actually—they sure are a fine example of the highest precision engineering out there. As they claim in their website, ”the sole and sides are flat and square ...

The Tool Gathering Odessy #11: Where Was THIS When I Needed It?

372 days ago by Tomcat1066 | 5 comments »

Some time back, I was finally able to pick up a Disston dovetail saw. If I remember correctly, these are rare animals out in the wild to some extent, and I paid more than I really wanted to. Again, this was a while back so I may be remembering this wrong. I do remember it being a pain in the butt trying to snag one off eBay. This difficulty of finding decent vintage saws at reasonable prices, coupled with the cost of new dovetail saws that are worth a flip, have been one of the driving ...

Disston Dovetail Saw Restoration #1: I've got questions... Please Help

380 days ago by Blake | 11 comments »

I found this beautiful old saw hanging on my wall yesterday. I think I bought it at at the flea market a while back and forgot about it. Its really nice, but its been abused and neglected. Its time for a face lift. I am assuming it is a dovetail saw? I want to know more about it. I would like to become more of a hand tool user. On the blade it says ”HENRY DISSTON AND SONS, CAST STEEL, PHILADA.USA, WARRENTED” And the handle says ”C. ROSENBURG” on both sides. It al...

Saw Sharpening: Wear Steel Underwear on This Slippery Slope

675 days ago by Eric | 8 comments »

I took a Woodcraft class last year called Hand Tool Basics and Sharpening. Took me through sharpening cabinet scrapers, chisels, hand planes and saws. A little bit about how to use them, but nothing significant. Loved the class, and I have to say I’m very happy with the sharpness of the chisels and plane blades I have done on my own since that class. Today I needed to cut up some MDF for a shooting board. Not knowing if MDF is good or bad for saws, I decided I didn’t want to ri...

My "Starter Set"

680 days ago by Eric | 8 comments »

[Taken from my Adventures in Woodworking blog, August 2007] Before heading back to SE Asia, I needed to accumulate the bare minimum tools needed for woodworking by hand. The class I attended at Homestead Heritage recommends 10 tools in particular, and this is where I started: combination square set of chisels strong layout knife combination marking/mortise gauge small dovetail or gent’s saw tenon saw small hammer for joint assembly solid joiner’s mallet smoothing plane...
