I’ve tried dovetails before with the one back saw I had before – a $5 Stanley cross-cut saw. Results were less than stellar, way less, even disgustingly horrible, so I gave up trying until I got some proper tools. I got a Veritas dovetail saw and some dovetail markers for Christmas (per my specific request). I bought a vise and finally got it installed last week. So, I was ready. I had seen Christopher Schwarz’s article on doing a dovetail a day and I decided to give it ...
Multiple Mortise and Tenon Joints I’ve owned a Leigh dovetail jig since the early 90’s. I started with the 12” model that I used for drawer construction. I switched to the 24” model so that I could join the top of a case to the sides with a through dovetail joint. I bought the M2 multiple mortise and tenon attachment for the 24” D3 jig prior to building a book case that was to hold a tremendous amount of books. I wanted more glue surface and strength than a rabbet joint could pro...
Watch this video to take a short tour of the furniture I’ve made in my living room and dining room. These rooms are the first thing you see when you walk into our house. Unfortunately, the living room had very little furniture that I’d made. My wife and I came up with a furniture plan to resolve that and I’m well on my way to filling the living room with hand-crafted furniture. The rocking chairs are quite comfortable and I love the sweeping lines. The foot stools...
Watch this video that gives a quick tour of the furniture I’ve built for my kitchen and family room. The rooms share an open space and this video shows the placement of the furniture in both areas. This table and chair set was a major project completed in two phases. The first phase included the first four chairs and the table. I completed the first chair in Jan 93 and the fourth in Oct 93. The table was completed in Nov 93. The second phase was the fifth and sixth chairs co...
This week I share with you a decorative box which features hand cut dovetail joints. This box is made of Mahogany and Pecan and its center piece being a Spalted Pecan Panel Lid. I am no authority on dovetails joints so I don’t go into a lot of detail on making hand cut dovetail joints. There are a lot of training videos and materials out there to reference off of. I used some of the pecan Which I had milled from free logs delivered to me by a tree service. When I re sawe...
Hi all, Here is part three, finishing with shellac. I just wanted to show a beautiful finish which is really easy to apply. Hope you all enjoy. Paul
Last week I received my Veritas dovetail saw and planned on having a dovetail practice session this past Labor Day weekend. Saturday, after straightening out my shop, I got out all of the tools that I would need and laid them on the work table near the front vise. I always have plenty of maple at the plant so I had brought home several pieces of soft maple that had been surfaced 4 sides to 3/4 in. x 5-1/2 in. I planned on making 4 practice corners and to take a break after completing each ...
I was considering using dowels to help hold my boards together for my benchtop; specifically, those boards that are a little extra bowed. However, Matt of Matt's Basement Workshop has informed me that due to the considerable strength of face-to-face gluing, that dowels might not be necessary – even for bowed boards. However, just in case, I decided to make a simple jig following Matt’s suggestion, which was:Two pieces of wood, one attached to the top of the other to act as a...
