Shop Stuff #5: Machine Cut Through Dovetails

155 days ago by SPalm | 28 comments »

Simple, Fast, Easy, Thin Pins, Variable Spacing, Looks Hand Cut, Simple Set Up, Tastes like Chicken. I have been playing around with dovetails for the last couple of weeks. I have tried many methods of making them, as complete hand cut ones are just too much work for me. I own a commercial Leigh dovetail jig but I have never been happy with the look or the futzing that it took to set it up. So this is what is working for me, all ideas are cobbled together from other designs. I cut the pins...

Sheraton Writing Desk - Making the Drawers

192 days ago by Guy Dunlap | 2 comments »

Making the three drawers for the Sheraton Writing Desk I am building. I cut half blind dovetails using a Leigh dovetail jig, and make a solid wood tapered bottom. I know videos on making drawers has been done to death, just thought I would share my process for doing it on this project. http://youtu.be/krYSPx63Mis

My Dovetail Jig Buying Journey #1: The first 25 Years.

442 days ago by JustJoe | 3 comments »

I spent yesterday playing with my newest joinery jig – the Incra LS-Positioner Super System. Others have already reviewed the Incra and rated it 5-stars (and I agree with them 110%). So instead of a review I thought I’d tell you about the personal journey of 25 years it took to get to the Incra. My dovetail obsession began in the 80’s when I was new to woodworking and hand skills were non-existent. I had plans for a small chest that required half-blind dovetails so I went and b...

Porter Cable Dovetail Jig #4216 #2: FedEx delivers and I started to test the unit.

721 days ago by Sawdustonmyshoulder | 5 comments »

The PC 4216 came in last week. I was able to open it up yesterday and get started. Looks like everything is here. Seems to be very well made…. like all of my PC equipment. In about 20 minutes, I had it ready to make my first joint. I decided to attempt a half blind dovetail joint. This unit as an adjustable side stop and this allows you to get that classic half pin on each end of the joint on any size drawer side. Well, the first attempt was way too tight… in ...

Porter Cable Dovetail Jig #4216 #1: Made the buy!!!!

750 days ago by Sawdustonmyshoulder | 3 comments »

OK….. I pulled the trigger on the Porter Cable #4216 dovetail jig. I need it for the kitchen in the new house and I am up against a huge deadline. The few extra dollars I paid for this unit is for the templates included. Mini dovetails and box joints and a through dovetail and box joint jig. Now, LJs, I have a Leigh D4R so I guess the question is, “Why in the world did you ‘downgrade’? Well, I have about 130 or so drawers to build. I am hoping this jig will speed up...

Baltic birch plywood tearout #1: In a dovetail jig

867 days ago by DouginVa | 5 comments »

Not too long ago I bought a sheet of baltic birch plywood for a armoir project for my daughter (pics to be posted at a later time). I was going to use the plywood for the drawer parts because it was being hailed as splinter free when using it in a dovetail jig. NOT I tried using backer boards in the front and back and still got tearout. If the ends didn’t tear out then the last layer of the ply de-laminated. This made fitting them and glue ups a pain in the ass. I know I coul...

How I did it . . . #1: The Dresser

1018 days ago by Jacquelyn Smith | 6 comments »

Design to Conception Are you interested in doing inlay, veneer, designing and building a project on your own? Here’s an example of a job I designed and built for a client last year. I already had a blog (perfect45degree.blogspot.com/) before discovering LJ. My guess is that most clients probably aren’t very interested in how I build other projects, only theirs. Given the community here, I thought I’d try writing about how I came to design and build the tünr (pronounced “tune-r”) dresser. ...

Dovetail Drawers

1414 days ago by dustbunny | 14 comments »

In the process of building my Torque cabinet, I decided to try some dovetail drawers for the first time.I figure even if I screw them up…they are for me, so no cares about messing them up. Back up the story, last February my husband bought me the Woodline Ultimate Joinery Deluxe Combo System when we were at the Woodworking show in Springfield MA. This is the set hereThey had a show special and the system came with nine template sets, six were a bonus, and the show price was I think $...

Some New Tools

1432 days ago by Michael J. Moore | 5 comments »

I picked up an AKEDA DC 16 Dovetail Jig on eBay about a week ago and it got here this last Tuesday. It’s in great shape. Most of the bits still have the coating on them and most of the parts were not opened. Now I do wish it was the BC 24 but those are on Backorder until who knows when so I had to go with what I could get. I decided to go with the Akeda after speaking with Kevan, the designer, about what I would be using it for. He offered some great insight and I am confident that I ma...

Tool Gloat

1583 days ago by davidroberts | 15 comments »

OK, I’ve got a tool gloat. I normally only buy woodworking tools used or on sale. This purchase is arguably one of my best. Reguarly $119 at Lowes, this Porter Cable 4210 Type 1 12” Dovetail Jig (for half blind and sliding dovetails) was a display and had been marked down a couple of times. When I saw it the price was $50. But that’s not what I paid. I know dovetails are the center of the universe for some, but I have never cut a dovetail, well a few sliding dovetails on...
