Over the past few years, I have had the chance to build my own door handles out of copper for several commissioned art-furniture pieces. This is something I enjoy doing, and it gives my work another niche to offer.

One of my first ideas for this challenge was to make a “green” table – as in recycled, not painted. After weeks of pondering, and ultimately ignoring the problem of where to begin, and more importantly, what to use, I remembered that I had this door sitting in my shed.

Here’s my most boring time-lapse yet – sanding up the cabinet doors to flush the rails and stiles, and prepare it for finishing. Speaking of… something I’d heard whispered around here a few times came to mind the other day while trying to get extremely gummy stickers off the maple I used in this project: mineral spirits. For the doors, I had a look through my stock piles, and this board, a 1/4”x8”x4’ tulip poplar plank – picked up at Home Depot months ago simply because it was so unusually pretty – really spoke to me. The picture makes things a lot more yellow than they are in real life. It’s loaded with purples (which will probably fade in time to brown), browns, greens, yellows, and lots of gradients.

Mine was about 7 years ago, I still wasn’t doing anything woodworking like, and we had moved to a new apartment where the bathroom door wouldn’t close since it was too tall and would hit the jamb (well- actually we mounted one of those over-the-door-hanger thingies which made things that way) so, my wife suggested we get a handplane to fit the door to the (now lower) opening.

Almost Done>
As I was reading the previous posted blogs on the construction of the Summer 2007 LumberJocks Joinery, I noticed that I failed to complete the posting of the latch for the cabinet door.
Not only had I failed to post it, I had failed to install it. I wanted to use something like a clothes pin.
The little loop that catches the wire for hanging clothes. I had created my wire simulation out of wood.

The only thing I changed was the two doors into just one big one. The two smaller doors looked too small for the size of the opening.

Good News / Bad News
Bad Newswell, I’ve tried the fasteners as hinges on the Fairy Door #9 and it’s not going to work. The door keeps falling off when opened. So.. I’ll either have to do some magic metal work to the hinge to keep them secure or… I’ll have to pry them off and find another alternative.
