Making Your Own Hardware, a Hammered Copper Finger Pull for the Tilt Front Laptop Computer Desk

775 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 23 comments »

Over the past few years, I have had the chance to build my own door handles out of copper for several commissioned art-furniture pieces. This is something I enjoy doing, and it gives my work another niche to offer. I would not say that I am a coppersmith, as there is a lot that I don’t know about the process. I am almost completely self-taught, so there is bound to be a lot I haven’t learned yet. I bought two old reprinted books on the subject of coppersmithing, and I think ...

Thorsen Table contest #3: getting started

948 days ago by scottb | 17 comments »

One of my first ideas for this challenge was to make a “green” table – as in recycled, not painted. After weeks of pondering, and ultimately ignoring the problem of where to begin, and more importantly, what to use, I remembered that I had this door sitting in my shed. It may have been original to the house, but has been collecting dust for the past 5 or so years since we bought the house and replaced the exterior doors – this one had dog door cut out of it and was ...

project: under [garage] door shelving cabinet #5: and now, some doors

167 days ago by Gary Fixler | 5 comments »

When we last left off, I was about to glue up the first cabinet door. Here it is clamped and drying: Here’s a detail (the wet marks at the left are just from wiping out glue – they dried up and disappeared): And because time-lapse videos are so fun, here’s the glue-up of the second door: And now the finished doors. Well… finished gluing together. Now there’s still sanding and coats of whatever I decide to use. I’ve been thinking of de...

hanging the doors, and some revelations

164 days ago by Gary Fixler | 4 comments »

Here’s my most boring time-lapse yet – sanding up the cabinet doors to flush the rails and stiles, and prepare it for finishing. Speaking of… something I’d heard whispered around here a few times came to mind the other day while trying to get extremely gummy stickers off the maple I used in this project: mineral spirits. It says right on the can “for cleaning surfaces in preparation for painting.” I wiped some on, and just like goop-off, the sticker goo wip...

project: under [garage] door shelving cabinet #4: cabinet doors work begins

168 days ago by Gary Fixler | 4 comments »

For the doors, I had a look through my stock piles, and this board, a 1/4”x8”x4’ tulip poplar plank – picked up at Home Depot months ago simply because it was so unusually pretty – really spoke to me. The picture makes things a lot more yellow than they are in real life. It’s loaded with purples (which will probably fade in time to brown), browns, greens, yellows, and lots of gradients. From those dimensions, I built a Sketchup model of the doors ove...

Handplanes #1: What was your first experience with handplanes?

287 days ago by PurpLev | 11 comments »

Mine was about 7 years ago, I still wasn’t doing anything woodworking like, and we had moved to a new apartment where the bathroom door wouldn’t close since it was too tall and would hit the jamb (well- actually we mounted one of those over-the-door-hanger thingies which made things that way) so, my wife suggested we get a handplane to fit the door to the (now lower) opening. I have never worked with a handplane before , and the closest thing I’ve ever held in my hand was...

Summer Joinery Entry Shaker Cabinet #4: Almost Done - Well really its done now,

852 days ago by Karson | 6 comments »

Almost Done> As I was reading the previous posted blogs on the construction of the Summer 2007 LumberJocks Joinery, I noticed that I failed to complete the posting of the latch for the cabinet door. Not only had I failed to post it, I had failed to install it. I wanted to use something like a clothes pin. The little loop that catches the wire for hanging clothes. I had created my wire simulation out of wood. This was installed in the end of a shelf board. The space behind the Holl...

Chi Omega Dorm Room #6: Singles Finished

150 days ago by Chris Davis | 0 comments »

I now have the singles finish up. You can see the final post at http://lumberjocks.com/projects/18514 . Here is the drawing and finished product: The only thing I changed was the two doors into just one big one. The two smaller doors looked too small for the size of the opening. Now I will be working on the two styles of bunk beds. Before I left two weeks ago, I made the prototypes and cut out the parts. While I was gone. I had my crew prep and sand everything for me. Hopeful...

Fairy Doors #2: #9 Part II

464 days ago by MsDebbieP | 14 comments »

Good News / Bad News Bad Newswell, I’ve tried the fasteners as hinges on the Fairy Door #9 and it’s not going to work. The door keeps falling off when opened. So.. I’ll either have to do some magic metal work to the hinge to keep them secure or… I’ll have to pry them off and find another alternative. But the GOOD NEWS is …. I have pictures. Side 1I used my router plane to create a dado in the pillar (joining the brown section to the yellow wall)Als...
