When we last left off, I was about to glue up the first cabinet door. Here it is clamped and drying:
Here’s a detail (the wet marks at the left are just from wiping out glue – they dried up and disappeared):
And because time-lapse videos are so fun, here’s the glue-up of the second door:
And now the finished doors. Well… finished gluing together. Now there’s still sanding and coats of whatever I decide to use. I’ve been thinking of de...

Over the past few years, I have had the chance to build my own door handles out of copper for several commissioned art-furniture pieces. This is something I enjoy doing, and it gives my work another niche to offer.
I would not say that I am a coppersmith, as there is a lot that I don’t know about the process. I am almost completely self-taught, so there is bound to be a lot I haven’t learned yet. I bought two old reprinted books on the subject of coppersmithing, and I think ...

Mine was about 7 years ago, I still wasn’t doing anything woodworking like, and we had moved to a new apartment where the bathroom door wouldn’t close since it was too tall and would hit the jamb (well- actually we mounted one of those over-the-door-hanger thingies which made things that way) so, my wife suggested we get a handplane to fit the door to the (now lower) opening.
I have never worked with a handplane before , and the closest thing I’ve ever held in my hand was...

- – - – - – - – -Update:I just realized I never posted pictures of the finished door.
After reading a few books on finishing, I decided to use Linseed Oil, Shellac, and Wax. I like the fact that these products are all very “natural” and have been used for centuries. And I am really please with the results.
After one application of Linseed Oil (boiled) I mixed the shellac myself (there is a place here in San Francisco called Sinopia Pigments that sells...

I now have the singles finish up. You can see the final post at http://lumberjocks.com/projects/18514 .
Here is the drawing and finished product:
The only thing I changed was the two doors into just one big one. The two smaller doors looked too small for the size of the opening.
Now I will be working on the two styles of bunk beds. Before I left two weeks ago, I made the prototypes and cut out the parts. While I was gone. I had my crew prep and sand everything for me. Hopeful...

Here’s my most boring time-lapse yet – sanding up the cabinet doors to flush the rails and stiles, and prepare it for finishing. Speaking of… something I’d heard whispered around here a few times came to mind the other day while trying to get extremely gummy stickers off the maple I used in this project: mineral spirits. It says right on the can “for cleaning surfaces in preparation for painting.” I wiped some on, and just like goop-off, the sticker goo wip...

For the doors, I had a look through my stock piles, and this board, a 1/4”x8”x4’ tulip poplar plank – picked up at Home Depot months ago simply because it was so unusually pretty – really spoke to me. The picture makes things a lot more yellow than they are in real life. It’s loaded with purples (which will probably fade in time to brown), browns, greens, yellows, and lots of gradients.
From those dimensions, I built a Sketchup model of the doors ove...

Like I said in the last blog, I don’t usually make prototypes. But since there will be so many, I wanted to work out as many unforeseen details as I could. I did finish up the first one of the three styles. This is the largest group with 10 beds.
After building this first one, I only found a couple thing I wanted to change. First I inset the drawers under the platform about 2” on each side. After getting it set up, I feel it would look better with only a ¾” inset of the drawers. Thi...

This would be my frist attempt at making raised panel doors, so I was a bit nervous and unsure how this would go. Before the christmas break in 2008, I researched some router bits and found the Freud 97-108 bit set. I went over to Rockler and talked to them and they said this bit set is excellent! The person in line behind me said he has them and highly recommends them. I just love them. They make a very professional looking panel and I was soooo impressed at how easy making raised panel ...
