Over the past few years, I have had the chance to build my own door handles out of copper for several commissioned art-furniture pieces. This is something I enjoy doing, and it gives my work another niche to offer.

One of my first ideas for this challenge was to make a “green” table – as in recycled, not painted. After weeks of pondering, and ultimately ignoring the problem of where to begin, and more importantly, what to use, I remembered that I had this door sitting in my shed.

Well, it’s almost done but now that I’ve seen the pictures I can see there are a lot of things to do yet and a lot of things that will just have to stay as “oops”.
But, the inside is cute so hopefully that will make up for the not-so-cute oopses.

Good News / Bad News
Bad Newswell, I’ve tried the fasteners as hinges on the Fairy Door #9 and it’s not going to work. The door keeps falling off when opened. So.. I’ll either have to do some magic metal work to the hinge to keep them secure or… I’ll have to pry them off and find another alternative.
But the GOOD NEWS is …. I have pictures.

I glued up the doors and set in knife hinges this week. Here are a few photos of the process.
First I glued up the doors. I sometimes have problems getting my panels and doors to glue up square so I came up with this simple jig to help with the process. It is nothing more than a couple of jointed sticks clamped square to the bench to keep the assembly square.

Mine was about 7 years ago, I still wasn’t doing anything woodworking like, and we had moved to a new apartment where the bathroom door wouldn’t close since it was too tall and would hit the jamb (well- actually we mounted one of those over-the-door-hanger thingies which made things that way) so, my wife suggested we get a handplane to fit the door to the (now lower) opening.

It’s not as interesting as working on the chair but I still got to work with tools and wood.
We replaced the old slider we had this weekend. My son-in-law came over and helped (read I was his gopher primarily). His Dad owned a glass shop for many years and he has been installing windows, doors, sun rooms, siding, and more since he was 14. He now works for a very high end residential design/build firm on the Cape. He is anal about his finish work….a good thing.

After reading a few books on finishing, I decided to use Linseed Oil, Shellac, and Wax. I like the fact that these products are all very “natural” and have been used for centuries. And I am really please with the results.

Warning: NO PICTURES attached. (So if you “NEED” pictures you will just have to wait until I’m finished the project!)
Fairy Door #9 is for my #1 grand-daughter who will be turning 6 next month!
This door, of course will have to be special and that means that it will be more than just a door. Yes, the door is going to open. Well, that’s the plan anyway. I had a heck of a time trying to figure out the hinges with the door only being 1/4” thick...
