Well, I procrastinated on this little project enough. Our two year old son, Mot Jr. (aka The Vandal,) needs a Christmas Gift from the shop. My daughter wants an iPod. What’s a guy to do. I settled on a plan from Lee Valley for a nice little rocker and started the build 2 nights ago.
I started by grabbing some wood from the rack. I chose red oak because it’s what I have in abundance and after an attempt to resist it’s downfalls, I’ve become quite used to working...

I have been hemming and hawing on what I was going to do to give this little bench a bit more character. It’s going to serve a dual role in being both my auxillary bench for hand tool work as well as my 2 year old son’s bench. In that vane, I decided to add a little detail to the apron…the shadow or inlaid dovetail. Please note: Though I prefer to do these one-off projects with handcut dovetails, the Akeda 16 Jig was used throughout.
To start, I joined one maple board...

Need a tool for those tricky and challenging joints?
Want to try a tool out before making a purchase?
Well now is your chance with a new and exclusive LumberJocks.com feature. How Martin did this is still a mystery! Look for the new CTS button on your LumerJocks browser and with a click of a button you can visit the shop of a LumberJock buddy and borrow a tool. Remember t...

Yeehaw! I anticipated this step all day. I had originally planned to use Dowelmax to join these pieces because I was more comfy with the jig and this has to align perfect. I then though, phooey! I’ll use Domino and give it a good test drive.
The first picture shows the Festool Domino fitted with the Trim stop. This fitting allows you to “center or off-set the Domino joiner on narrow work pieces for perfect positioning.”
HA! If anyone can screw this up, I can! I d...

For the cabinets, I wanted movable shelves. I was told that the Euro style round pins “looked tacky”, and I didn’t want to run tracks, but I’d run across a note by Charles Wilson suggesting the use of Dominos for shelf pins, and that seemed like a great idea.
I cut a strip of wood the width of the spacing I wanted, cut it in half, put a lip on each one so that I could place it on the edge of my carcase sides and it’d protrude over at 90 degrees. Then it was j...

This weekend’s goal is getting the cabinet beside the stove to at least have a usable counter-top. We picked up a beaten up 10’x2’ glued up piece of maple countertop off of Craigslist for $50, and that’s becoming the surface for beside the stoive, and the narrow counter for under the window, with a backsplash cut from the scraps. Today I took a deep breath and cut the first pieces.
As I said, the counter-top was pretty beat up with a few gaps, so as I sanded...

I debated whether I should put this entry here or over at HomeRefurbers, but that site really hasn’t taken off yet, and the process of coming up with our kitchen cabinets is feeling a whole lot more like woodworking than it is home improvement. Although an upgrade from the 1 person 1947 kitchen will certainly be an improvement.
My arm was good enough this weekend to play in the shop again. My main project was to mock up a prototype to some lightweight appliance lift ideas I̵...

Got a client who’s being a little slow this morning, so I took the time to whip together a seat for my chair.
A few lessons learned:
I really do need to be able to visualize the chair all the way through the seat, the ad-hoc mounting here meant that the seat is a little higher than I wanted, so the backslats don’t ride on my back where I wanted.
The Domino makes joinery almost too easy. I love that tool.
For a real “Maloof” style look I need to be wo...

Sunday night we were going to start on the bathroom vanity, but Charlene didn’t feel like hanging out in the shop, so I went out to make some sawdust. We’ve got a bunch of spare birch, so I took the scrappiest of it and started to push the limits of how I interacted with our tools and wood. This is where I’ve gotten to so far.
I had a chair for my office, one of those standard el-cheapo office chairs you get from the big box stores, and it broke. Then we moved, in t...

I started today by gluing up the top.
Doh! #1I decided to use Dominos for the project and did not pick the right size so I cut all the way through the case.
Fix. I decided to use through Dominos for the project.
Actually the shelves are held in by through Dominos and a false dado I created by layering plywood on the outer pieces. Glue and staples hold the second layer on.
Left to right = bottom to top of side
Case AssemblyAssembly is a snap with the Dominos. They hold the p...
