Hi Folks,
There is alot of Domino support and bashing, as well as Dowelmax support and bashing on various woodworking forums. Typically the owners of the tools talk about them like they are just about the second coming. The detractors talk about their excessive (relative) price. The Domino “won’t pay for itself.” The Dowelmax is no better at 250 bucks than a beadlock is at 50 bucks. Usually stuff like that. If you read close enough or care, many of the supporters an...

Ok, so I am sitting here weighing the costs of some tools. On the one hand, the Festool Domino set with dominos, guides, and a dust collector for approximately $1300. On the other hand, I need a table saw and a planer. The money for the domino would likely cover these items. Which way do I go?
The Domino would allow me to do mortise and tennon joints much more easily than now. It would have the greater flexibility of positions, large sizes, etc. compared to the mortise machine. But ...

Cherry Chest Update
Well I got to squeeze in some time out in the shop and work on the cherry chests that are being built for the Annual Quilt Show in Sisters, Oregon. They will be on display at The Clearwater Gallery.
I could not resist the new LumberJock CyberToolShare s feature, so I hopped on the internet late one night and borrowed Tom’s Festool Domino. I used the Domino to assemble the frame and panels into the final box.

What a pleasure to have these Troop 728 Scouts in the shop working on their Woodworking Merit Badge. The boys are getting very close to completing the requirements. Having just returned from summer camp at Camp Pioneer in the Cascades, we identified a large service project to improve the archery range. We constructed 8 archery stands from cedar and plastic drainpipe. The boys used a combination of pocket screws and floating tenons to construct the stands. They each got some great hands on exp...

I have been hemming and hawing on what I was going to do to give this little bench a bit more character. It’s going to serve a dual role in being both my auxillary bench for hand tool work as well as my 2 year old son’s bench. In that vane, I decided to add a little detail to the apron…the shadow or inlaid dovetail. Please note: Though I prefer to do these one-off projects with handcut dovetails, the Akeda 16 Jig was used throughout.

DominoThis is only my second project using the domino. This time I set the fence on top of the workpiece instead of setting both on the work surface. I was trying to center the tenon. It worked, but I am not sure if I mastered the technique since some of the parts are not perfectly flush. Possibly I rocked it on the narrow breadboards. I should have put a support piece behind the work piece. It is only a hair from flush though.

Yeehaw! I anticipated this step all day. I had originally planned to use Dowelmax to join these pieces because I was more comfy with the jig and this has to align perfect. I then though, phooey! I’ll use Domino and give it a good test drive.
The first picture shows the Festool Domino fitted with the Trim stop. This fitting allows you to “center or off-set the Domino joiner on narrow work pieces for perfect positioning.”

For the cabinets, I wanted movable shelves. I was told that the Euro style round pins “looked tacky”, and I didn’t want to run tracks, but I’d run across a note by Charles Wilson suggesting the use of Dominos for shelf pins, and that seemed like a great idea.

I started today by gluing up the top.
Doh! #1I decided to use Dominos for the project and did not pick the right size so I cut all the way through the case.
Fix. I decided to use through Dominos for the project.
Actually the shelves are held in by through Dominos and a false dado I created by layering plywood on the outer pieces. Glue and staples hold the second layer on.
