Fall SketchUp Challenge - Empire State Dining Table

795 days ago by Brad_Nailor | 22 comments »

I have always been a big fan of the art deco style and early 20th century skyscrapers so I decided to combine both for inspiration for my virtual table design. After plowing through tons of images I found a really great art deco mirror from the 1930’s that really inspired me for the tabletop..For the leg inspiration I used my favorite skyscraper ever designed The Empire State Building!...So this is it..my Art Deco Empire State Dining Table! The material is tiger maple and wenge. The top...

Stickley Sideboard #1: Selecting the Plans

112 days ago by CaptainSkully | 6 comments »

At first, I was enamored with #802, as done so well by Dale I looked it up in Robert Lang’s book “Shop Drawings for Craftsman Furniture”. I found an article on building it in Woodworking Magazine, Summer 2009 edition. I felt like I had done my homework and thought I might slip this in between the dining table and the chairs. We already have decent chairs. I didn’t really realize it until I saw Stickley Sideboard #818 at the Arts & Crafts Fair in San Fr...

Fallingwater Dining Table

792 days ago by kevin | 12 comments »

When it was time to design my table, there was only one choice for the inspiration. As a graduate of architectural design, I’ve always been fascinated with Frank Lloyd Wright. I spent a lot of time with my nose buried in books about “Fallingwater”, his masterpiece. Then I went there…. It was amazing! The entire house seems to have grown from the rock all on it’s own. I returned from the trip and wrote my final paper on Fallingwater. Since then I...

Fall Sketchup Challenge Entry - Backwards Bridge

810 days ago by ThreeJs | 14 comments »

This bridge fell during a tropical storm a few years ago. Now it servers as a dam, and the river flows over it rather than under. Today cars do not use the bridge to travel the forest road, but that doesn’t stop a few adventurous hikers. The bridge. Wire frame showing the construction of the table The woods depicted in the table design are primarily cherry and maple, with walnut accents.Front View Left View The table. Fall Sketchup Challenge Entry - Honey Table

812 days ago by Damian Penney | 19 comments »

I didn’t leave England until my early twenties and have loved Earl Grey tea for as long as I can remember. I even went to University in Newcastle Upon Tyne where Charles Grey, the second Earl of Grey was born and raised and my favourite way of drinking that great mans tea is in a china mug with a big old blob of honey mixed in to it. So my inspiration for this table is the humble honey bee. The table top is comprised of maple and walnut hexagons mimicking a honeycomb with a hive like...

SketchUp Challenge - A Month Late

757 days ago by cheller | 7 comments »

I’m really late with this. August and September were very busy months, mostly related to upheaval at work. In the insanity I had trouble deciding on an inspiration and even more trouble finding the time and energy to focus on learning SketchUp. About a week before the deadline I finally came up with an inspiration. But despite my best efforts I couldn’t get it together to submit on time. The final straw was primarily mental (no wise cracks, please). I really didn’t wan...

Fall Sketchup Challenge

811 days ago by mot | 21 comments »

There has always been a monument that intrigued me. It’s in the US somewhere. I was born, raised, and live in Canada. You think I could find this monument? I don’t where it is, or what it’s called, but I knew what it looked like. Well, I did eventually find it. It’s called the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. I once knew it as the St. Louis Arch. In looking at the wonderful work done by fellow lumberjocks, I’ve become fascinated with bent lam...

Fall Sketchup Challenge

815 days ago by Bob Babcock | 23 comments »

Just like the tutorial I had to do something quick. I’ve recently become very interested in Standup Paddleboarding. Most of you have also seen the gates I built for my brother at his home on Maui. My brothers home is a short distance from arguably the most famous surf break in the world….Jaws. All that coupled with my recent paddle building experience led me to create the Jaws Dining Table. The creation of the model was very simple. I first created the outline of the wave. T...

Craftsman Dining Room Set #6: The Hard Part

81 days ago by CaptainSkully | 3 comments »

So, today I ran over to Plywood & Lumber Sales in Oakland, CA and purchased about 100 board feet of quartersawn white oak. I finally have enough lumber to do the dining table. I’m going to start with the top and get that finished so I can bring it into the dining room and set it on top of my old table. This will get rid of the MDF table top we’ve been using for months. It’ll also let me use the MDF for more important things like jigs. I also abhor the tablecloth we&...
