SketchUp Challenge - A Month Late

300 days ago by cheller | 7 comments »

I’m really late with this. August and September were very busy months, mostly related to upheaval at work. In the insanity I had trouble deciding on an inspiration and even more trouble finding the time and energy to focus on learning SketchUp. About a week before the deadline I finally came up with an inspiration. But despite my best efforts I couldn’t get it together to submit on time. The final straw was primarily mental (no wise cracks, please). I really didn’t wan...

Fallingwater Dining Table

334 days ago by kevin | 12 comments »

When it was time to design my table, there was only one choice for the inspiration. As a graduate of architectural design, I’ve always been fascinated with Frank Lloyd Wright. I spent a lot of time with my nose buried in books about “Fallingwater”, his masterpiece. Then I went there…. It was amazing! The entire house seems to have grown from the rock all on it’s own. I returned from the trip and wrote my final paper on Fallingwater. Since then I...

Virtual Dining Table Challenge - Hundertwasser Table

335 days ago by daltxguy | 11 comments »

Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928-2000) was an Austrian Painter and sculptor. Born in Austria he lived and worked primarily in Vienna but eventually made New Zealand his permanent home. He was one of Austria’s best known contemporary artists though he remains controversial. I first got to know Hundertwasser from my own time spent living in Vienna and like Hundertwasser I too now make my home in New Zealand, so it seemed appropriate to use his work as my inspiration. The common themes in hi...

Fall SketchUp Challenge - Empire State Dining Table

337 days ago by Brad_Nailor | 20 comments »

I have always been a big fan of the art deco style and early 20th century skyscrapers so I decided to combine both for inspiration for my virtual table design. After plowing through tons of images I found a really great art deco mirror from the 1930’s that really inspired me for the tabletop..For the leg inspiration I used my favorite skyscraper ever designed The Empire State Building!...So this is it..my Art Deco Empire State Dining Table! The material is tiger maple and wenge. The top...

Folsom Stadium Dining Room Table

345 days ago by steved | 10 comments »

I love College Football in general, and specifically the CU Buffaloes. So, I used Folsom Field as inspiration. I also used Layout, which comes with SketchUp Pro, and used the style feature to add a more hand drawn look in certain views.

Challenge 03 Entry - Bridge Dining Table

346 days ago by RickInTexas | 12 comments »

So after missing out on the last challenge, I made myself get this one done before time ran out. Let me first start by showing my influence. This shows the column and cap design that I like that we are using for bridges around the Houston area. I work for Texas Dept. of Transportation, so I thought that doing a table inspired by not one single location, but by all the bridges that I have been around for the past couple years. This second one shows the beams between two bent caps. So here it ...

Fall Sketchup Challenge - Wagon Wheel Table

350 days ago by Buckskin | 9 comments »

Being from Wyoming I have a passion for all things Western, Rugged, and Rustic. Don’t tell anyone this, but I am beginning to like Sketchup. I posted in an early thread how I would rather just use pencil and paper to do my design work. After what Mot has named the “Freedom Table” I decided to try again. I actually like this approach to design. It can be easily flipped and rotated to give different vantage points. Something my pencil and paper skills lack. So bac...

Penobscot Narrows Table

351 days ago by Vanmaineac | 12 comments »

I have the good fortune to go to Penobscot Bay in the Gulf of Maine every summer. In the past two years they have been building a new bridge to replace the old one. It was completed this past summer. They put on quite a show to open it. It’s total length is almost half a mile and when you get up onto the observatory you are 42 stories in the air. Only two of these cable-stayed bridges exist in the US.For the table I used the basis of the bridge as the legs and on top I imported a pi...

Fall ScetchUp Challenge

352 days ago by Buckskin | 10 comments »

Okay, I wrestled with this and wrestled with this. I must be resistant to change. I am not sure I know how to use SketchUp any better than I did. I think I have learned a few new words though. LOL. In all seriousness this was fun. Anyway here is the inspiration for my entry: And now for my table. It is simple in design and long on pride. The table is 4’ x 6’ with 36” legs.

Fall Sketchup Challenge Entry - Backwards Bridge

352 days ago by ThreeJs | 14 comments »

This bridge fell during a tropical storm a few years ago. Now it servers as a dam, and the river flows over it rather than under. Today cars do not use the bridge to travel the forest road, but that doesn’t stop a few adventurous hikers. The bridge. Wire frame showing the construction of the table The woods depicted in the table design are primarily cherry and maple, with walnut accents.Front View Left View The table.
